Falconara Marittima has a long sandy beach. For an active day out, the first kilometres of the “La pista Ciclabile dell’Esino” cycle route run along flat river embankments and through open landscapes. Castles with medieval traces
According to tradition, Castello di Falconara Alta was built in several stages by the Counts Cortesi between the 11th and 12th centuries. From there, the view stretches from the Apennines to the sea; musical and theatrical performances also take place at the castle.
Castello di Castelferretti still has a square layout with defensive walls. Four towers, battlements, a drawbridge and an inner courtyard have been preserved. The castle has an accessible route for people with mobility impairments. The Ferretti family ruled over the Castelferretti area from the 13th century until well into the 18th century.
Rocca Priora has been known as “Rocca di Fiumesino” since the early Middle Ages. According to a historian, it was built at the mouth of the Esino River on the left bank to protect Falconara’s borders from attacks from Ancona.
Art and sacred culture
CART is a permanent documentation centre for contemporary art in Palazzo Pergoli in Falconara Marittima. The Centro Cultura Piero Pergoli permanently displays works by Valerio Trubbiani on Giacomo Leopardi, as well as sinopias of the frescoes of Santa Maria della Misericordia.
The Chiesa di Santa Maria della Misericordia was built by the Counts Ferretti following a plague epidemic at the beginning of the 15th century. It was created between 1450 and 1455 and forms part of a valuable fresco cycle in the cemetery chapel of Castelferretti. The Biblioteca Archivio Pinacoteca dei Frati Minori delle Marche houses the Historical-Franciscan and Picenian Library “San Giacomo della Marca”, the Provincial Archive and the International Pinacotheca of Contemporary Franciscan Art “Nel nome di Francesco”.
Zoo and recurring festival
At Parco Zoo Falconara, visitors can see around 200 specimens from 40 mammal, bird and reptile species. FalComics is a recurring festival dedicated to comics and pop culture, held in the centre of Falconara Marittima.
