Cupramontana and its surrounding area have always been associated with winegrowing and wine production. A DOC recognition decree from 1968 designated Cupramontana and the neighbouring municipalities as the historic production area of Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi. The wine produced there may be labelled classico.
This wine tradition is particularly vivid during the Sagra dell'Uva. The grape festival began on 23 September 1928 and is considered the oldest grape festival in the Marche, as well as one of the oldest in Italy. The Sagra includes traditional dances such as the Saltarello, folk singing and the Palio della Pigiatura. In this competition, representatives of the municipalities in the Verdicchio DOC production area compete in grape treading.
The culinary side of the festival is also an integral part of the townscape. At traditional stalls decorated with branches and ivy, known as “capanne”, typical local gastronomic products and the renowned Verdicchio di Cupramontana are offered. For you, the Sagra can therefore provide a particularly direct introduction to the town's products and customs.
Traces of the Middle Ages and places beneath the ground
After the former Roman centre was abandoned, a new medieval settlement emerged in Cupramontana. This development provides a historical backdrop for the places where the area's history is particularly impressively brought to life today.
The MIG – Museo In Grotta is located in the cellar rooms of the former Santa Caterina monastery and focuses above all on the history and traditions of Verdicchio. The Museo Internazionale dell'Etichetta, on the other hand, displays an original collection of wine labels from bottles from around the world.
Another historical trace leads to the Eremo dei Frati Bianchi, also known as Eremo delle Grotte. The first traces date back to the 11th century. Caves carved into the local tuff stone served Camaldolese monks as places of penance and prayer.
The area around the Eremo includes an old path bordered by a stream, centuries-old trees, the stream's water and an especially tranquil landscape. This place therefore provides a peaceful contrast to Cupramontana's festive and museum-related attractions.
The Abbazia del Beato Angelo was formerly called Santa Maria in Serra and is located exactly one kilometre from the centre of Cupramontana. Several entrances, step-free access and free admission are among the abbey's practical features. Please enquire with the institution about opening hours.
