Gerola Alta between mountain sports and valley history

Gerola Alta combines a mountain area with a diverse local and valley history. In Pescegallo in Gerola Alta, the Valgerola-Pescegallo ski area offers opportunities for alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, ski mountaineering, snowboarding and snowshoeing. The small Pescegallo ski resort extends from 1,450 metres to an altitude of 1,950 metres and is accessed by a chairlift and a ski lift below the Bocchetta di Salmurano. The altitude and the two lift facilities give winter sports in Pescegallo a clear connection to the location. The mountain area around Gerola Alta also offers hikes to Pizzo Tre Signori. At the same time, the beech and chestnut forests gradually give way to pine forests. Pizzo Tre Signori and the change from beech and chestnut forests to pine forests create two distinct accents in the mountain landscape.

Forests, hikes and Bitto

The local cuisine is also connected to the landscape: DOP-certified Bitto cheese is produced on the working alpine pastures of Gerola Alta. The working alpine pastures give Bitto a specific connection to the rural landscape of Gerola Alta. Gerola Alta can therefore be discovered through both sporting experiences and its culinary and rural character.

Villagescape and ethnographic tour

The historic character includes the hamlet of Laveggiolo, with numerous still-intact examples of traditional high-mountain rural architecture, as well as the parish church of San Bartolomeo with its Baroque façade. Next to the church stands the Oratorio dei Confratelli, dating from 1669. The church and the Oratorio thus appear in the village scene as two religious buildings with different historical connections. The Baroque façade and the year 1669 create different historical accents in the village scene.

An ethnographic tour follows the village streets and passes through its hamlets. It includes a cheese dairy where wheels of historic Bitto cheese are stored for ageing, as well as an antique loom that is still in operation in the historic town centre. The tour also includes a former water mill that once ground various types of grain. In addition, there is the so-called “canevel”, a small room in which a watercourse was used to keep milk cool.

Ecomuseum and getting there

The Ecomuseo della Valgerola preserves the valley’s nature, history, culture, knowledge and culinary traditions. It is a decentralised museum located in the areas of Gerola Alta, Pedesina, Cosio Valtellino and Rasura. The visitor centre “La casa del tempo” contains evidence of the geological history of Valgerola. Within the museum, the visitor centre has its own connection to the geological history of Valgerola.

Gerola Alta can be reached from Morbegno by car via the SP7 della Val Gerola or by bus. Travel from Morbegno therefore takes place via this road or by bus. For travel planning, car and bus from Morbegno are two different forms of transport to Gerola Alta.
