Chiuro combines a terraced landscape shaped by orchards and vineyards with a remarkable local history, wine-making traditions and a variety of trails. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Chiuro can therefore tailor their stay to different interests: historic buildings, vineyards, regional crafts and hikes through the mountain landscape.

The characteristic terraces give the landscape around Chiuro its distinctive character. Many Valtellina wineries are based here and produce Valtellina Superiore DOCG and Sforzato. By prior arrangement, visitors can enjoy guided tours of the wineries' cellars. Culinary traditions are also part of the local identity: Chiuro has a craft tradition of producing Pezzotti valtellinesi, the rustic rugs of Valtellina.
Palazzi, Churches and Frescoes
Chiuro's historic centre includes the fortified Palazzo of Stefano Milite Quadrio. Palazzo Quadrio de’ Maria Pontaschelli stands on Via Borgofrancone; its construction began in the 16th century, and it was substantially expanded and embellished in the 18th century. Its courtyard contains a rare, well-preserved two-storey wooden loggia from an old Valtellina house.
Several religious buildings add to this historic setting. The Oratorio dei Confratelli di Santa Marta is richly decorated with frescoes and crowned by a characteristic ten-segment dome. The interior of the parish church of Saints James and Andrew combines Baroque design with frescoes in medallions on the barrel vault by Giuseppe Prina. The Chiesa della Beata Vergine Maria della Neve e di San Carlo dates from the 17th to the 18th century; its vaults feature three medallions painted by Cesare Ligari in 1767.
The Chiesa di Sant’Antonio is a 15th-century building and preserves fragments of 15th- and 16th-century frescoes. The Portichetto dei Disciplini, located next to the parish church, dates from 1563 and contains frescoes by Cipriano Valorsa. In the lunette of an archway, a fresco attributed to Cipriano Valorsa depicts a Pietà along with Saints James and Andrew. The history of the hamlet of Castionetto also stretches far back: in 1959, Maria Reggiani Rajna found two engraved prehistoric stelae in a dry-stone wall of a vineyard.
Trails between Chiuro and the Mountain Landscape
Chiuro is connected to several documented routes. The Ponte in Valtellina–Chiuro stage of the Sentieri di Gusto leads along Via Parravicini into Chiuro's old religious district. The Sentiero del Sole crosses the village from east to west, with several hiking trails branching off from it.
The Valle dei Laghi is considered an easily accessible hike; its name refers to the small glacial lakes. The route begins at Alp Pian dei Cavalli and leads to Lac Gelt, where chamois, marmots and rock ptarmigans can be seen. Above Castionetto di Chiuro, a section of the Sentiero Italia also follows a route of the Sentiero del Sole adapted for bikers. The Chiuro–Sondrio–Berbenno di Valtellina section of the Via dei Terrazzamenti begins in Chiuro.
Wine, Festivals and Regional Specialities
Grappolo d'Oro takes place in the first week of September and is dedicated to the red wines of Valtellina. The 2026 edition includes guided tastings and walks through the vineyards. Another culinary event consists of two evenings held in honour of bresaola, which take place every year on the third weekend of July at the “La Colonia” sports field.
When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore decide in advance what to focus on during your stay: local history and wine, routes through the terraced landscape or a hike with opportunities for observing nature. Chiuro brings these themes together without requiring you to limit yourself to just one way of travelling.
For further orientation in the surrounding area, you can also find Premadio, Campodolcino, Valdisotto, Tirano, Mello, Sondrio, Teglio and Sernio.
