Sondrio combines an impressive urban history with wine heritage, nature trails and exceptional panoramic experiences. When choosing a holiday apartment in Sondrio, you can tailor your stay to very different interests: museums and churches, walks and bike rides, or a relaxing day in the park.

Culture between the castle, museum and palazzi

Castello Masegra is Sondrio's only surviving medieval military complex and has remained intact and active to this day. The castle houses a Renaissance camera picta with a fresco cycle depicting Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando furioso. The Museo Valtellinese di Storia e Arte was founded in 1947. It is located in Palazzo Sassi de Lavizzari in the historic center, in an accessible building. The Arte Sacra department features an exhibition route through eight halls; it was established in 1961 as an outpost of the Museo Diocesano di Como.

The Collegiata dei Santi Gervasio e Protasio is Sondrio's main church. Its Baroque nave was designed by Pietro Ligari in the 18th century and connects with a Neoclassical presbytery and a Neoclassical façade. Inside are important paintings and frescoes by Pietro Ligari, Antonio Caimi and Giovanni Gavazzeni. Palazzo Martinengo also tells the story of the city: its present appearance is typical of the 19th century and dates back to work carried out after the devastating flood of 1834. The monument was completed in 1839 by Giuseppe Croff, a pupil of Canova, and is considered an example of Neoclassicism in Sondrio. Palazzo Sertoli forms part of an architectural complex of three interconnected palazzi; the Torre Ligariana is a historic landmark and one of the city's most representative cultural heritage sites.

Wine, nature and special trails

In Palazzo Martinengo, the Sale del vino welcome visitors and introduce them to Sondrio's identity as a wine-producing city. The installation includes a wine-tasting room and videos about winegrowing, available in Italian, English and German. Nature and protected areas are the focus of the Centro documentazione aree protette: it features a screening room that is free for the public to access, as well as numerous documentaries about the environment, nature and ethnography. In addition, the international SondrioFestival takes place every October in Sondrio, featuring documentaries about parks.

For outdoor activities, Parco Adda Mallero Renato Bartesaghi offers a range of options. The approximately 20-hectare park lies at the confluence of the Mallero stream and the Adda River. Cycle paths and footpaths, as well as a protected route, connect it with Sondrio's city center. Areas for recreation, walking, running, relaxing and children's play allow for different daily rhythms. A particularly striking experience is the Passerella sulle Cassandre del Mallero: it is 145 meters long, suspended just under 100 meters above the stream, crosses its gorges near Gombaro and can be crossed on foot or by bicycle. The Passerella is open around the clock every day.

The Via dei Terrazzamenti runs for more than 70 kilometers between Morbegno and Tirano through Sondrio; Sondrio can serve as a starting point in either direction. Along the hiking trail are 40 rest areas with benches and bicycle racks in natural surroundings. These differences may help when choosing your accommodation: a holiday apartment in Sondrio can be geared toward cultural discoveries, wine, time in the park or active days along the trails. The Infopoint on Piazza Campello is open seven days a week and provides advice on sights in the city and its surroundings.
