Trezzo sull’Adda: Visconti Castle and Villa Gina

Along the Adda, ruins, villas, a hydroelectric power station, a fish ladder, botanical biodiversity and a ferry connection stand side by side. The river is part of the setting of the stronghold, the description of Villa Gina and the journey on the Romulus ferry.

Visconti Castle and Parco del Castello

Parco del Castello contains an archaeological park with the ruins of Visconti Castle. Visconti Castle was an important stronghold on the Adda River. Trezzo sull’Adda’s historical focus centres on both the name of Visconti Castle and its function as a stronghold.

Hydroelectric Power Station and Fish Ladder

At the Alessandro Taccani Hydroelectric Power Station, architect Gaetano Moretti designed the architectural execution. At the Taccani weir, a fish ladder enables fish to pass upstream. The technical facility and the fish passage show two different relationships with the water along the Adda: design and natural movement. At the power station, the focus is on the architecture, while at the fish ladder, it is on the route taken by the fish.

Villa Gina and MuVA in Concesa

Villa Gina was built on a promontory in Concesa. It overlooks the Adda River and the beginning of the Naviglio della Martesana. The ground floor of Villa Gina houses MuVA, the Museo Interattivo della Valle dell’Adda. It presents the history, nature and geography of Parco Adda Nord. In this way, the villa combines its location along the waterways with a museum in the same building. Villa Gina thus brings together the Adda River, the beginning of the Naviglio and the themes of Parco Adda Nord at a single stop.

Villa Visconti and Sanctuary

Villa Visconti houses the Alessandro Manzoni Municipal Library and the Quadreria Crivelli. The latter includes paintings, prints and furnishings that have been restored and convey the atmosphere of Villa Visconti’s past. The sanctuary in Concesa was inaugurated on 3 September 1641.

Isola della Biodiversità

More than 200 specimens from 32 different botanical species grow on Isola della Biodiversità. These include trees, shrubs and perennial herbaceous plants. The path on Isola della Biodiversità was also designed for people who are blind, visually impaired or have an autism spectrum disorder. The island therefore provides a distinct focus within the diverse river landscape. Both the plant population and the design of the path are integral to describing this area.

A Trip on the Romulus Ferry

A trip on the Romulus ferry takes approximately one hour. The entrance to the Romulus ferry is located opposite the “Al Molo sull’Adda” restaurant at Via Alzaia 13 in Trezzo sull’Adda. For day planning, the crossing can be scheduled as a separate period of time. The specific boarding point and approximate duration give the ferry trip a clear place alongside the permanent attractions.
