Adro lies at the foot of Monte Alto and includes the hamlet of Torbiato. Two hiking ideas

In the area around Adro, Monte Alto has an easy circular hiking trail of around 7 kilometres with views over Franciacorta and Lake Iseo. The third stage of the long-distance La Via delle Sorelle hiking trail also passes through Adro. This provides both a circular route on Monte Alto and the third stage of a long-distance trail for different hiking plans.

Churches as a journey through Adro's history

The churches in Adro span several centuries. Santa Maria in Favento was built at least in the 13th century and is the oldest surviving sacred building in Adro. The church preserves panels and frescoes that were added from the early 14th century through to the middle of the 16th century. Santa Maria Assunta in Castello was rebuilt from 1505 on the site of the remaining medieval castle complex; its interior was consecrated in 1522 and features a single-nave layout with a wooden-beam ceiling and decorated terracotta tiles.

Santa Maria Assunta in Castello served as Adro's parish church until it was replaced by the new parish church of San Giovanni Battista in the 17th century. San Giovanni Battista in the centre of Adro is a new parish church from the 17th and 18th centuries, with rich Baroque stucco and decorative elements as well as works by Fantoni da Rovetta.

Pilgrimage, castle and municipal history

The pilgrimage church of Madonna della Neve is associated with a Marian apparition traditionally said to have taken place on 8 July 1519 in Adro, at the site of Oneto. Beneath the presbytery, it has a crypt accessed by three stairways: two side stairways and a wider central one. Every year on 5 August, a religious festival takes place there, featuring Masses, processions, religious rites and a traditional fair with stalls selling typical products.

Ruins from the 14th century survive from the medieval fortifications of Adro's historic settlement, including the Ghibelline Tower, the landmark of the town. The entrance gate is the only fully preserved remnant of the old castle of Adro. The Bargnani-Dandolo Palace was donated to the municipality of Adro on 31 January 1904 by Ermellina Maselli di Figino, the widow of Count Tullio Dandolo. Several building projects in the 17th and 18th centuries gave it its eclectic appearance; the first project is probably dated to between 1670 and 1680.

Wine and practical information

Adro has numerous wineries that offer visits and tastings. Historically, Adro was a centre of textile production; numerous spinning mills operated there until the beginning of the 20th century.
