Holiday apartment in Terzorio: Churches, Caruggi and Miniere d'Argento

Terzorio is a Ligurian hill village with Caruggi and small lakes. The sea is just a very short distance away, while the village is also shaped by its hillside location. The villagescape features churches, the Miniere d'Argento di Terzorio and the Torre Antibarbaresca, as well as paths through the village's natural heritage. The hillside setting, proximity to the sea and historic buildings thus provide three different points of reference for exploring Terzorio.

Paths, Caruggi and small lakes

More than 15 km of paths and trails run through the village's natural heritage. The Caruggi and small lakes complement this landscape with Terzorio's village character. When planning a hike, the length of the route is a separate time-planning factor. A longer section requires more time than viewing a single building. Breaks and the duration of visits to the village sights should therefore also be included in the same plan. Anyone wishing to combine paths and sightseeing can take this into account by planning a longer section and the buildings separately.

Churches from different periods

For those interested in culture, the Chiesetta di San Sebastiano, the Chiesa Natività di San Giovanni Battista and the Oratorio di Santa Maria Maddalena are the main religious buildings in Terzorio. The Chiesetta di San Sebastiano is one of the oldest buildings in Terzorio. It is considered the oldest building in Terzorio; the first historical records date from the 13th or 14th century. The small church was restored both outside and inside. In terms of chronology, it predates the Chiesa Natività di San Giovanni Battista, which was built in the 17th century.

Construction of the Chiesa Natività di San Giovanni Battista began in 1730 and was completed in 1745. Its interior contains a wooden crucifix by the sculptor Giovanni Dinch.

The Oratorio di Santa Maria Maddalena was already documented as an old parish church in 1444. From 1745 onward, the old parish church became the Oratorio di Santa Maria Maddalena. Today, the Oratorio houses the seat of the Confraternita di Terzorio, which is also dedicated to Santa Maria Maddalena. The former parish church and the current seat of the Confraternita are therefore located in the same building.

Silver mines and Torre Antibarbaresca

The Miniere d'Argento di Terzorio were operated by a Belgian mining company from 1850 to 1857. They are the only mining extraction site in western Liguria. Visitors are strictly prohibited from entering the Miniere d'Argento di Terzorio. In the case of the Miniere, the historical classification must therefore be distinguished from actual access.

The Torre Antibarbaresca was built in the 16th century and was part of an observation system consisting of several towers. The towers stood within sight of one another. The tower was therefore not isolated, but part of this observation system.
