Holiday apartment in Capranica: Culture and Nature on the Via Francigena
Capranica combines historic buildings, protected landscapes, local wine events and creative activities. This makes it a destination where culture, nature, pilgrimage history and shared exploration come together in a variety of day-trip ideas.
Historic Sites and Sacred Art
Capranica lies along the northern Via Francigena. In the oldest quarter, the Torrione dell’Orologio stands beside the castle of the Anguillara family. The Chiesa di Santa Maria has a late Romanesque bell tower and may date from around 1200. The Romanesque Chiesa di San Francesco was restored by Antonio Muñoz in 1927. It contains the Gothic tomb of the brothers Francesco and Nicola Anguillara, who died in the 15th century.
The Chiesa della Madonna del Piano stands immediately outside the town walls. It was built between the late 12th and early 14th centuries based on a design by Vignola and houses a fresco from the Sienese school attributed to Andrea Vanni. The Palazzo Accoramboni was built between 1571 and 1579 based on a design by Giacomo del Duca; its halls are decorated with frescoes and mythological figures. Its winter garden overlooks the Via Francigena. The Museo delle Confraternite di Capranica preserves the memories and experiences of the town’s brotherhoods.
Wooded Gorges along the Pilgrimage Route
The Parco dell’Acquaforte is part of the Valloni della Via Francigena natural monument and takes its name from its iron-rich spring. The Via Francigena passes through the park. The natural monument extends across two wooded gorges, which are also crossed by the Via Francigena. Remains of rock chapels built for passing pilgrims have been preserved there. In Macchia di Caporipa, the Area Archeologica del Castellaccio preserves the remains of ancient buildings and pre-Romanesque fortification walls.
Wine, Music and Creative Activities
GIRO diVINO comprised three seminars on wine and tasting; registration was required to participate. There were also two evenings of tastings, music and performances in Capranica’s historic centre. With “Divertiamoci a colori!”, art workshops returned to the Centro Civico “Piersanti Mattarella”. “Parco dell’allegria” was announced as the fourth edition.
