Holiday Apartment in Piansano: Nature, Trails and Culture
Piansano lies amid the gentle hills of the volcanic area of the Vulsini Volcanic Complex. Around Piansano, walks through forests and hill country combine with Etruscan history, regional products and excursions to the nearby surroundings of the town.
Hiking between Trails and Forest
The Sentiero Natura is part of a complex network of ochre-coloured trails extending east and west outside Piansano’s town centre. The historic mule track follows the so-called Ruscello delle Streghe. Along the Sentiero Natura, a 1.5-hectare deciduous forest can be reached by a stream. Downy oaks, Turkey oaks, hornbeams, sweet chestnuts, service trees and poplars grow there. This combination of trail, stream and different tree species provides several specific points of interest on a hike, without nature enthusiasts being limited to a single type of landscape.
Another connection is provided by the Sentiero della Salute between Piansano and Capodimonte. The Maternum Marathon is a hiking event on trails around the ancient Etruscan city of Maternum. In 2026, it includes three circular routes of 11, 19 and 39 km. The different route lengths help you organise your own hiking plans and compare different ideas for a day out.
Culture in the Townscape
The Etruscan rock tomb Tomba rupestre etrusca bears a long onomastic inscription in the Etruscan language. The Chiesa di San Bernardino da Siena has a single-nave nave and six chapels. It also houses the body of the Venerable Lucia Burlini. In the entrance area of the Palazzo comunale di Piansano stands an Etruscan sarcophagus bearing the engraved name of its owner, Vel Cnevnas Velus. The Loggetta of the Palazzo comunale is also historically interesting: some scholars date its construction to the first half of the 18th century.
At the entrance to the town, the Fontana del Giglio preserves a peperino stone panel with the Farnese lily and the year of construction, 1585. The fountain was extensively remodelled in modern times, bringing older and newer design elements together. During the Ascesa della Madonna, a wooden processional headdress decorated with lacquer and colourful inlays is used.
Hill Country, Lake and Local Specialities
In the steeper areas around Piansano, pastures, sown fields and oak forests alternate. Pecorino is also part of the town’s local identity and is one of Piansano’s typical products. In the nearby area, Lake Bolsena offers opportunities for windsurfing and relaxed boat trips. The Selva del Lamone nature reserve is also nearby and can be reached for excursions and walks. When choosing a holiday apartment in Piansano, this makes it possible to combine active days, peaceful observations of nature, culture and regional culinary delights in your plans.
For more ideas in the area, you can also discover Marina Velca, Monterosi, Oriolo Romano, Fastello, Trevinano, Pian Di San Martino, Ronciglione and Tre Croci from Piansano.
