Socchieve is a destination for travellers who want to combine sacred art, mixed forests above Feltrone and trails with views over the Val Tagliamento. Between the Pieve di Castoia, historic churches and varied routes, it offers an itinerary where culture and outdoor activities can take different priorities. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can therefore first consider whether their stay should focus mainly on church art, walking trails, or loop routes and uphill hikes.

Church art and a walk along the Tagliamento

The Pieve di Castoia is dedicated to Santa Maria Annunziata. It stands on a hill between Nonta and Socchieve and overlooks the middle course of the Tagliamento. At the same time, it is considered a symbol of Christianity in the valley. There is a car park at the foot of the ascent. The route From the Pieve di Castoia to the Stavoli is a walking trail where Socchieve’s history and nature can be experienced. It crosses the Lumiei via a concrete ford. After this crossing, it follows the signs for the Cammino delle Pievi and CAI trail no. 239.

The Church of San Martino also adds an art-historical highlight. It is a national monument and contains an important fresco cycle by Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo from 1493. The Alta Valle del Tagliamento route leads to this church in Socchieve. In Viaso, there is also the Church of San Giovanni Battista, with a Gothic window and a polygonal presbytery. It dates from the 15th century. For planning your trip, these places offer specific cultural points of interest without requiring every day to follow the same pattern.

Routes for different daily itineraries

The Anello del Monte Nolia begins in Feltrone and circles Monte Nolia via the Stavoli della Congregazione. The route initially passes through mixed forests above Feltrone, then reaches Provincial Road 35 in the Conca di Pani area. From Socchieve’s smallest hamlet, the loop trail offers views across the Val Tagliamento as far as Tolmezzo and Monte Amariana. One distinctive feature along the route is an inscription carved into stone. It is connected with a peace agreement between the villages of Voltois and Feltrone concerning a border dispute.

Those who want to fit a route with clearly defined details into their daily itinerary will find them on the Salita a Casera Chiarzo: the ascent is about 2 kilometres long, covers around 380 metres of elevation gain and is estimated to take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. The route is part of the CAI trail network and is well signposted along its entire length as trail no. 235. At Casera Chiarzo, the main room contains a stone fireplace, a table and two benches; outside, there is a large table made from tree trunks. This makes it possible to plan the outing differently from a walk to the Pieve or a loop with wide valley views.

Tradition and seasonal culture

The Rassegna Carnica: Arte, Cultura, Lavoro combines an exhibition with a market showcasing traditional mountain crafts and work made using newer techniques. It takes place in summer between July and August and has been held for more than 30 years. The event can therefore become a special cultural focus of your trip. When choosing accommodation in Socchieve, it is useful to consider whether you would like to focus your stay more on the churches and the exhibition, the Anello del Monte Nolia, the route From the Pieve di Castoia to the Stavoli with its crossing of the Lumiei, or the Salita a Casera Chiarzo. This provides a suitable basis for a trip combining nature experiences, traces of history and self-planned daily itineraries.
