Moggio Udinese: Val Alba, mountain trails and culture
Accommodation in Moggio Udinese
Moggio Udinese combines protected mountain landscapes, historic paths and distinctive examples of regional culture. The Val Alba Regional Nature Reserve was established in 2006 and covers almost 3,000 hectares within the municipality. It lies in an ecological transition zone between the Alps and the Pre-Alps, as well as between the Carnic and Julian Alps. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home for a varied stay will find different starting points here for nature experiences, hikes, culture and regional specialities.
Val Alba and paths through the mountain landscape
The diversity of Val Alba is part of Moggio Udinese’s character. Çuc dal Bôr, a Site of Community Importance within the Natura 2000 protected-area network, is also located there. An easy walk leads to Rifugio Vuâlt and into the wooded hollow of the same name. Detours lead to Bivacco Bianchi, the springs of the Torrente Alba and the remains of military installations. This makes it possible to spend a day in nature in different ways, without reducing every route to the same type of hike.
Stavoli di Moggio offers an impressive combination of landscape and settlement history. The hamlet can only be reached on foot; the hike begins in Campiolo and follows CAI trail 417 along the Torrente Glagnò. The small group of uninhabited stone houses tells of an earlier way of life shaped by alpine farming, isolation and adaptation to the mountain environment. Those planning a longer tour can extend the hike via Moggessa di Là and Moggessa di Qua into a circular route. The complete loop is just under 11 kilometres long and involves approximately 650 metres of ascent.
Hikes with varying levels of difficulty
The Anello del Monticello also offers a clear change of scenery. The circular hike begins in Località Travasans in Moggio Alto, initially follows a partly concreted road and then continues along a forest path. At Monte Monticello, at an altitude of 1,362 metres, a 360-degree panorama opens up. For a more demanding plan, consider the hike to Monte Chiavals: it is classified as an EE route for experienced hikers, is approximately 13 kilometres long and involves around 1,100 metres of ascent. Access is from Moggio Udinese via the SS13, the SP112 and the road through Val Aupa to a small car park near the access restriction to the Val Alba Nature Reserve.
Monte Flop offers another possibility. The moderately difficult circular hike via Rifugio Grauzaria is 13.8 kilometres long and has a stated duration of 6 hours and 55 minutes. The trail passes through pine forest and higher-altitude meadows with gentians and orchids; the summit area features a rich variety of flora and fauna. The starting point is accessible by public transport: the Moggio–Bevorchians line runs to the Gialloz stop, after which the route continues to the Nanghez car park, where trail 437 to the refuge begins.
Abbey, tower and regional highlights
For a quieter cultural part of the trip, San Gallo Abbey is located on the Colle di Santo Spirito in Moggio di Sopra, within the municipality. The Benedictine abbey was founded in 1085 by Federico di Moravia, Patriarch of Aquileia, and consecrated in 1119 by Patriarch Ulrico di Eppenstein. The abbey church houses an 18th-century Nacchini organ, considered the largest organ in Friuli. The square Torre delle Prigioni is the oldest surviving part of the original fortified complex of Moggio Udinese.
Those who prefer to combine history with activity can plan the Grauzaria–Monticello–Moggessa–Moggio route, which passes several old hamlets of Moggio Udinese. For cyclists, the Alpe Adria FVG1 route also starts in Moggio Udinese. It uses the old railway line and passes through tunnels as well as over viaducts and bridges. When choosing accommodation, it is therefore worth considering your preferred daily rhythm: Moggio Udinese works well as a base for tours and cultural visits, while individual hikes have their own starting points in Campiolo, Moggio Alto, Val Alba or at the Nanghez car park.
From alpine products to other local ideas
Regional cuisine is also part of exploring the municipality. Brovadâr is a traditional processed product from Moggio Udinese, particularly from Val Aupa, and is made from a small-growing, late-sown turnip variety of the species Brassica rapa. At Malga Rio Secco, an agriturismo, visitors can taste cheeses and cured meats made on the alpine pasture, among other products. From there, paths lead to Casera Cason di Lanza and to the alpine pastures of Caserutte, Valbertat Bassa, Meledis Bassa and Ramaz.
To compare other destinations, you can also view Pozzuolo del Friuli, Lusevera, Magnano In Riviera, Sutrio, Lavariano, Santa Maria la Longa, Rivignano and Lestizza.
