Pulfero – Trails, Nature and History
Accommodation in Pulfero
Pulfero combines impressive mountain landscapes, well-signposted trails and traces of a turbulent history. The town is suitable for planning a trip that combines experiences in nature with cultural discoveries. Monte Mia is particularly characteristic: the mountain reaches 1,237 metres above sea level and is considered the municipality’s most important ecologically untouched area.
Hiking between Monte Mia and Matajur
There are various routes to choose from for active days. The Anello Stupizza-S.Andrea-Montefosca circular trail is 8.4 kilometres long and uses CAI trails 723, 752 and 735. If you would like to plan a longer mountain route, you can consider the Sentiero naturalistico del monte Matajur. The 12.6-kilometre trail begins in Mersino Alto and leads to the summit of Matajur at an altitude of 1,641 metres. These two routes offer different planning options without having to be combined into a single route.
The network of trails in Pulfero itself is also an important part of the town’s character. The municipality has easy-to-walk, well-signposted trails leading to numerous sites of landscape and ecological interest. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether you would like to spend your days mainly on longer mountain trails, shorter nature excursions or a combination of outdoor activity and culture.
Nature observations and special places
One of the notable natural attractions is the Castagno monumentale di Pegliano near Coceanzi-Pegliano. The monumental chestnut tree is 25 metres high and has a trunk circumference of 783 centimetres. Another impressive place is the Grotta di San Giovanni d'Antro. This is a long, intermittently active karst spring that extends into the mountain. During heavy rain, a considerable watercourse flows through it; even during periods of low water, there are several lakes there. Independent visits to the cave are not permitted in order to protect its natural and cultural heritage.
The Centro Visite di Stupizza complements the nature experiences with a reconstructed bear cave, videos and documents relating to university research, as well as themed trails for schools and families. Nearby is the Palestra di Roccia, which is managed by CAI Cividale. If you are travelling with children, the visitor centre is therefore a specific starting point for a themed, guided exploration of nature; for other days of your trip, the trails and mountain destinations are suitable as the main focus.
Discoveries of cultural and historical interest in Pulfero
The history of the municipality is reflected in several different places. The Fontane dei Cavalleggeri di Alessandria in the centre bears a Habsburg eagle and four portraits of rulers. The two fountains outside the town, by contrast, display the Cavalleggeri coat of arms beneath the Savoy crown. The Lastre di Antro were connected with the Banche di Antro and di Merso. Until the 19th century, legally and administratively significant assemblies were held there, contributing to the autonomy of the Natisone Valleys.
Near the church of San Giacomo Apostolo in Biacis, in the municipality of Pulfero, lie the remains of Castello di Ahrensperg. The castle controlled the connecting road between Cividale and the transalpine region of Noricum in Austria and was part of the medieval fortification system along the Natisone River. Above Lasiz, the church of San Donato is decorated with extensive frescoes that probably date from the 16th century. It is also included in the route of the 44 votive churches of the Natisone Valleys.
A suitable base for different types of days
Accommodation in Pulfero can be selected according to your preferred pace of travel: you can focus on hiking days on Matajur and Monte Mia, get to know natural phenomena such as the karst spring, or plan visits to sites of cultural and historical interest and sacred art. Those who want to combine several interests will find Pulfero to be a varied thematic setting for their trip. When choosing your holiday apartment, consider above all which experiences should be the focus for your group and whether you would prefer to organise your days around active pursuits, nature or culture.
