Venzone: Defensive Ring, History and Paths along the Tagliamento
Accommodation in Venzone
Venzone combines impressive history with paths through the landscape. At its center is a defensive system whose original urban layout was preserved during reconstruction. This is interesting when choosing a holiday apartment if you would like to combine culture, short explorations in the historic center and excursions on foot or by bicycle.
A defensive ring shaping the townscape
The defensive ring of Venzone has a circumference of approximately 1,300 meters. It encloses the town in an irregular hexagon with fourteen inner insulae and is complemented by sixteen towers. Four gates, arranged according to the cardinal directions, provide access to the citadel. Despite extensive reconstruction, the defensive system is still considered the only surviving example in the area of a defensive ring dating from the 13th century.
The restoration of the town is also an essential part of its history. Houses and monuments were rebuilt while restoring the old appearance and individually cataloguing the stones. More recent structures were not reconstructed. This allows you to experience Venzone not merely as a collection of individual sights, but as a town whose layout and appearance are closely connected with its past.
Cathedral, museum and unusual insights
The sculptor Master Giovanni worked on the northern portal of Venzone Cathedral in 1308. The virtual reconstruction of the cathedral offers a special perspective on the building: it was created based on the original structure, while the architectural parts affected by the collapses were modeled almost stone by stone as 3D graphics.
Tiere Motus is housed in Palazzo Orgnani Martina. Photographs, videos and documents tell the story of the 1976 earthquake and the reconstruction of Friuli; the museum opened in 2009. The crypt of the cemetery chapel of S. Michele also contains five mummified bodies dating from 1348 to 1881. Those traveling with varied interests can combine these historical stops with a natural history exhibition: the permanent exhibition “Forests, Man, Economy in Friuli Venezia Giulia” includes a mycological exhibition with more than three hundred mushroom specimens.
Hiking, cycling and landscape
For a walk near the historic center, the “Sentiero Natura delle chiesette di Venzone” is a good option. The route is described as an easy hike and offers views of the surrounding mountains and the Tagliamento River. This adds a manageable physical activity to a culturally focused stay.
The “Anello di Pioverno” circular route starts in Venzone. After crossing the bridge, it follows the riverbank and passes through cool, shady forests. If you are looking for a different type of route, you can also plan the cycling stage of the Alpe-Adria-FVG-1 route: it starts in Venzone and heads south toward Gemona del Friuli. The two options offer different focuses and help you divide your days between local history, riverside landscapes and cycling.
Getting there and other destinations
Even without traveling by car the entire time, Venzone can be included in your excursion planning. The access information provided by Prealpi Giulie Nature Park lists Venzone railway station as one of the stations from which various places can be reached by regular buses. In addition, the train-plus-bicycle service on route C102 stops directly at Venzone railway station.
When looking for a suitable holiday apartment, you can therefore first decide whether you mainly want to experience the reconstructed townscape and cultural attractions, the paths along the Tagliamento, or a combination of cycling and hiking days. You can find further destinations in Ravascletto, Sant'Eliseo, San Vito Al Torre, Cividale Del Friuli, Treppo Grande, Artegna, San Valentino and Bertiolo.
