Artegna combines an impressive local history with trails through landscapes, small churches and special destinations for varied days during your holiday. Between the historic Via Villa, the La Turbine waterfall and the remains of a fortified settlement, you can discover different sides of the town. This makes Artegna interesting for anyone who, when choosing a holiday apartment, is looking for more than just a place to stay and wants to combine culture, nature and personal excursion plans.

Churches and history in the townscape

A good introduction to the history of Artegna is the Pieve di Santa Maria Nascente. It was built in 1824, blessed on Christmas Eve 1830 and consecrated in 1854. Further religious sites are located in different parts of the municipal area: the Chiesetta di Santo Stefano stands on the hill above the hamlet of Clama. The Chiesetta di San Leonardo near the village of Sottocastello is documented by a record from the late 13th century. Inside, there is a 19th-century altarpiece. It depicts Saints Bernardino of Siena, Leonard of Noblac and Simon the Apostle venerating the Madonna and Child.

The Chiesetta di San Giorgio near Aplia Superiore also tells of more recent history: after the 1976 earthquake, it was rebuilt and rededicated in 2013. Its façades bear the names of the inhabitants of Artegna who fell in both world wars; the history of Aquileia is also addressed there. In the town itself, the central Via Villa preserves the historic street layout through a long sequence of buildings and several architecturally significant palazzi. On Colle di San Martino, the tour includes the monumental remains of a cistern from the 5th to 6th century, ring walls and other uncovered elements of the late antique and medieval fortified settlement. The monumental complex includes the Pieve and Castello di Savorgnan. The Chiesetta di San Martino in Artegna dates from the 16th century.

Waterfall, trails and cycling tours

The multi-level La Turbine waterfall provides a moment in nature. You can view it in its entirety from its base or follow the path to reach its upper edge. Another option is the easy Artegna route: it runs from the town centre along a wooded path on the edge of the village and leads to the centuries-old Mont washhouse on the Clama stream. This allows you to combine historical traces and landscape in your own day plan, without all activities having to follow the same pattern.

Cyclists and hikers will also find specific options. The Osoppo and Gemona Plain cycle circuit starts in Artegna; from Buja, it continues across the plain towards Artegna. A hiking trail also leads from the village of Artegna to Mount Faeit. Nearby is Lavio di Salt on the road from Artegna to Montenars, below the bridge over the Torrente Orvenco and just beyond the hamlet of Salt. The site is of considerable size.

Choose accommodation to suit your travel plans

When looking for a holiday apartment in Artegna, you can first consider which experiences should shape your stay.
