Ampezzo between culture, forests and mountain trails
Accommodation in Ampezzo
Ampezzo between the Tagliamento and Lumiei rivers
Ampezzo lies in the heart of Val Tagliamento at an altitude of 560 m, between the Tagliamento River and the Lumiei mountain stream. This gives the town a clearly defined valley setting and makes it possible to plan a trip that combines culture and hiking. For families and other travel groups, the question is less about a single highlight than about finding the right mix of short discoveries, nature trails and historic sites.
A special introduction to the history of the landscape is provided by the Museo Geologico della Carnia. Its collection of rocks and fossils, explanatory panels and multimedia displays make the history of Carnia, from 450 to 40 million years ago, comprehensible. It also contains fossils of pterosaurs found in Preone. Museum visits are possible by request, which you should take into account when planning your day.
Art and history as part of the trip
The Pinacoteca Marco Davanzo offers a permanent exhibition as well as a temporary section renewed annually. A reconstructed studio containing the painter's materials and tools is also part of the visit. Those interested in regional art will find a different way of experiencing the area here than on a hike: the focus is not on the distance covered, but on the paintings, working materials and presentation of the collection.
Religious buildings also offer an insight into the history of the region. The Duomo di San Daniele Profeta houses paintings by Nicola Grassi from 1725 and has a Baroque altar by Giovanni Saidero from 1641. The present-day Chiesa della Santissima Trinità in Oltris was consecrated on 16 August 1771 and is associated with the artisanal cultural heritage of Carnia. It contains a painting of the Trinity attributed to Gian Pietro Fubiaro. This allows different periods and forms to be combined in a cultural part of your trip.
Hiking trails with different focuses
At Passo Pura, the Foresta di Ampezzo offers opportunities for hiking. From there, a network of marked trails leads to the surrounding peaks. The Biotopo di Cimacorso complements this offering with hiking opportunities on the valley floor. This allows you to organize your days according to the landscape you prefer: peaks and marked trails can be set against a route on the valley floor, without both experiences having to be planned in the same way.
Other special features include the “Bosco Flobia” educational trail, which was created for people with visual impairments, and the developed “Tiziana Weiss” nature trail. For practical orientation around Pura, the following is also important: the launch point for the flight from Pura can be reached from the centre of Ampezzo via the road to Pura in approximately 20 minutes by car. A forest road leads from Passo Pura to the Belvedere.
Choose the right holiday apartment for your plans
If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Ampezzo, you can use your preferred type of trip as a selection guide. For a culture-focused stay, museums, the art gallery and churches take centre stage. Those who want to spend as much time outdoors as possible can focus on the Foresta di Ampezzo, Passo Pura, the Biotopo di Cimacorso and the marked trails to the peaks. A mixed itinerary combines individual cultural destinations with a day of hiking and leaves room for different interests within the travel group.
