Grignano combines an impressive cultural history with an extensive park and insights into the marine world of the Gulf of Trieste. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Grignano will find a starting point here for varied days between Miramare Castle, botanical gardens, the harbour and the Miramare Marine Reserve. The area is particularly interesting for travellers who want to combine architecture, landscapes and nature experiences rather than simply visiting one attraction.

Miramare Castle and the park

Miramare Castle was built between 1856 and 1860 as the residence of Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg and his wife, Princess Charlotte of Belgium. It stands at the tip of the Karst peninsula of Grignano. The building, made of Istrian stone, was designed in an eclectic style by the Austrian engineer Carl Junker. The castle’s rooms contain, among other things, caskets, clocks, chinoiserie and archaeological finds.

The castle includes a 22-hectare park. Its character results from the interplay of an English landscape garden and formally designed, geometrically structured areas in the parterre. The greenhouses at Miramare were intended for experimental botanical activities. The stables are also part of the complex designed by Carl Junker; they were built between 1856 and 1860. Those interested in architecture, garden design and historical collections can take these different aspects into account when planning their day.

Marine reserve and BioMa

The western entrance to Miramare Park is located at the harbour of Grignano. The landscape also includes the 90-hectare buffer zone of the Miramare Marine Reserve. It is 400 metres wide. All forms of fishing except shore-based recreational fishing, as well as anchoring, are prohibited there. These regulations shape the view of the protected marine area and make it clear that observing nature here goes hand in hand with consideration for the area.

BioMa is located in the right wing of the castle’s former stables, a five-minute walk from the Habsburg residence. It offers an immersive year-round environmental interpretation of the Gulf of Trieste and the Miramare Marine Reserve – from the sea surface to the depths of the sea. Its offerings include a special touch pool with benthic organisms. Guided tours last one and a half hours and can be requested by schools, groups and associations by prior arrangement.

Getting there and planning your trip

Some regional trains stop at Miramare station. From there, you can reach the park in two minutes on foot through the upper entrance. BioMa can then be reached in 15 to 20 minutes through the botanical garden. To travel by bus, line 6 towards Grignano is available from Trieste. Line 51 connects Trieste Airport or Monfalcone with Miramare. These options are helpful if you choose your holiday apartment as a base and want to organise individual excursions without planning your trip exclusively around the car.

An additional seasonal experience is Seawatching, accompanied by WWF staff. It takes place every year from June to September in small groups. This means that the range of experiences in Grignano extends from historic interiors and gardens to a guided engagement with the sea. Families can therefore incorporate different interests into their trip planning: a culturally focused day, an exploration of the park or an appointment with a stronger focus on nature and water.
