Trieste is considered a border city where Latin, Slavic and German cultures meet. Piazza Unità d’Italia is regarded as the heart of Trieste. From this urban centre, the discovery leads to historic buildings, memorial sites, museums and nature experiences.

Culture and History

Castello di San Giusto was built between 1468 and 1636 by Austrian emperors. The visit begins with an introduction to the history of the site and the urban development of Trieste. The open defensive walkways then connect three bastions; from there, views extend over the city, the Gulf of Trieste and the Karst.

Another historical dimension is revealed by the Risiera di San Sabba. It is a national monument as well as a memorial site and museum. Today, it is also a venue for commemorative ceremonies as well as educational and cultural activities. At the Museo Revoltella, guided tours and educational programmes complement the cultural offerings. The Teatro Romano once provided seating for 3,500 spectators. The lower sections of the partially reconstructed brick seating rows have been preserved.

At the Museo Sartorio, the Tiepolo drawings are displayed alternately in two rooms on the second floor.

Nature and Collections

Underground, Grotta Gigante leads along a guided visitor route extending over 850 metres. The tourist route descends to 101.10 metres below the entrance. The Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Trieste displays Antonio, Tethyshadros insularis, the largest and most complete dinosaur found in Italy. The museum’s collection comprises 4 million finds, while the exhibition tour leads through numerous rooms on two floors.

The Civico Orto Botanico di Trieste currently also serves as an educational and recreational site. It preserves local horticultural varieties as well as the spontaneous and endemic flora of the region and neighbouring areas. The Civico Aquario Marino di Trieste adds a maritime perspective: the aquarium opened in 1933 and has around 30 tanks of different sizes. Its vivarium houses numerous amphibian and reptile species, particularly from Friuli Venezia Giulia and the neighbouring regions.

The nearby area of Trieste is home to the Centrale idrodinamica del Porto Vecchio di Trieste, the Postal and Telegraphic Museum of Central Europe, Kleine Berlin and the Museo del Risorgimento e sacrario di Oberdan; all four are museums. Vedetta d'Italia and Vedetta Alice, two viewpoints, are also located nearby.
