Samatorza: Settlement, Churches and Karst Trails
Accommodation in Samatorza
A look at Samatorza leads from a fortified settlement with a long history to churches, caves and trails. The sites and routes offer a range of highlights: archaeology and architectural history are just as much in focus as walking and cycling routes and seasonal places to eat.
San Leonardo: fortified settlement and church
The fortified settlement of San Leonardo near Samatorza dates from the Middle Bronze Age to the Early Middle Ages. It has an inner wall 260 metres long, an outer wall about 600 metres long and four terraces. In the Trieste Karst, it is generally considered one of the oldest and most extensive hill forts. The measurements and terraces give a tangible impression of the site, while the long dating period establishes its historical context.
At the summit of Monte San Leonardo, the remains of a small, single-nave church with an apse have been preserved. It was dedicated to Saint Leonard. Samatorza’s first written mention also belongs to the area’s history: it dates from 1327. The settlement’s early written record and the much earlier dating of San Leonardo therefore represent different points of reference in time.
Churches and places of remembrance
The Church of San Ulderico dates from the 15th century and is one of the oldest churches in the Karst. Its architectural features include a small rose window and a bell gable with three bells. A small cemetery lies behind the church. Among those buried there, alongside local residents, is a Polish soldier who died in 1917. The church thus combines a distinctive architectural form with a specific place of remembrance from the First World War.
Trails, caves and traces of the First World War
For walking routes, there are several options: Trail No. 010 passes through Samatorza; near the village, it first goes past the Grotta Ternovizza and then continues to Ternova Piccola. The Gemina hiking route comes from Ternova to Samatorza along an unpaved path. For cycling, the Aurisina–Samatorza–Precenico route leads as far as Samatorza. The starting points and modes of transport mentioned can help you choose a route that suits your travel plans.
Near Samatorza, Grotta Lesa is part of the Škaljunk Lupinc Park educational trail. The trail reconstructs trenches and other military installations from the First World War. It passes through the main entrance of Grotta Lesa and exits via a stone staircase. The cave name Grotta Azzurra is also associated with Samatorza: the cave is also known as Grotta Azzurra di Samatorza.
