Viano combines a hilly landscape shaped by ridges and valleys with unusual geological formations, historic sites and an extensive network of hiking trails. Most of the land is used as vineyards, arable land, meadows or pasture; woodland and undeveloped areas also shape the landscape.

Hilly landscape and unusual natural phenomena

West of Viano lies the Monte Bergola geosite. The ridge, which runs from east to west, reaches 436 m above sea level at Monte Bergola and covers just under 40 ha. Its significance lies in its stratigraphic and geomorphological characteristics. Native Scots pines with distinctive reddish bark also grow on the slopes of Monte Duro, Monte Mesolo and Monte Pilastro. These stands are considered relics of the last Ice Age; the Scots pine stands in the hills of the Province of Reggio Emilia are the southernmost in Italy.

Another special feature is the Salse in Viano. There, gaseous hydrocarbons, methane and carbon dioxide rise through clay and marl layers as well as groundwater horizons. This creates volcanic-like cones with summit craters and mud flows. For travellers who want to experience the landscape not only as a backdrop but also through its geological forms, this is a distinctive part of the area.

Hiking trails with different route profiles

The local hiking network is recognised within the REER, the hiking trail network of Emilia-Romagna, and covers 40 km. For planning a day out, the three circular routes of the Sentiero del Cuore can be compared using their stated lengths and elevation differences: C1 is 5.3 km long and has an elevation difference of 39 m. It runs along the valley floor of the Torrente Tresinaro between Cadonega and Borgo Corte. C2 on the Pulpiano plateau covers 4.9 km and has an elevation difference of 50 m. C3 between Regnano and Casola Querciola is 4.2 km long and has an elevation difference of 103 m.

Those who prefer a longer hike can also plan a section of the Sentiero Spallanzani, which crosses Viano from Rondinara to San Giovanni di Querciola. The Sentiero naturalistico del Querciolese nature trail leads through Cà Bertacchi, Tabiano, Castello Querciola, Cervara, Regnano and Cortevedola. The specific route details help you take different preferences for length and elevation difference into account for your travel group, without judging the trails against one another.

Archaeology, castles and art

The earliest documented evidence of human presence in Viano dates from the Neolithic period, the 4th millennium BC; significant settlements were located in the area of Casola Querciola and Pulpiano. The Terramare village of Cà Bertacchi also documents settlement in the area during the Bronze Age. In Castello Querciola, the castle recalls its former function as a temporary refuge from numerous raids and later as a summer episcopal residence. A restored frieze by Lelio Orsi can be seen in the former parish office.

The castle of Viano is also part of the area's history. Its origin is uncertain and in any case dates to after the year 1000; it was the area's most important administrative centre. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Castello Querciola houses an organ built by Pietro Cavalletti in 1821. Older rural settlements include fortified tower houses. One stands in San Polo and contains a valuable fresco.

Truffle tradition and excursion planning

The Fiera del Tartufo brings together exhibitions, tasting workshops, performances, truffle-themed street food and traditional dishes. The event thus complements Viano's natural and historical attractions with a culinary focus. If you choose your holiday apartment in Viano as a base for different days out, you can alternate between hikes, geological discoveries, culture and regional cuisine.

The Via dei Vulcani di Fango connects places and geological features of the mud volcano or Salse landscape in Maranello, Fiorano Modenese, Sassuolo and Viano. The Salsa di Casola Querciola is the Reggio Emilia-side endpoint. For further travel planning, you can also view La Collina, Il Cantone di Pieve Modolena, Casina, San Donnino Di Liguria, Montecatini, Villa Minozzo, San Bartolomeo and Castelnovo Ne' Monti.
