Casina combines impressive trails, protected natural areas and cultural features with a landscape that can be explored in different ways.

Hiking between Castello di Sarzano and Casina

The Via Matildica del Volto Santo descends from Castello di Sarzano to the first houses on the outskirts of Casina. It also continues through Casina towards Migliara and Marola. Castello di Sarzano includes a keep and monumental areas intended for visits. This makes it possible to combine a hike with a historic starting point, without defining the route solely through a single excursion destination.

Anyone planning to take this route should contact the responsible office by email before setting off. Hikers can obtain the official hiking certificate and up-to-date information on trail conditions there. This is particularly helpful for planning your trip if you intend to make the hiking day a fixed part of your stay in Casina rather than simply deciding spontaneously.

Nature experiences with different focuses

The Bosco del Bocco can be reached on foot from the SS 63 state road at Mulinetto via CAI trail 626. In the Bosco della Pentoma, easy paths lead from Bergogno to the Pentoma stream, the protected deer-tongue fern, a sulphur spring, a small grotto and a small waterfall. These places offer different reasons to spend time outdoors: you can focus on the trail itself or make individual natural features the destination of your exploration.

Bergogno is one of the best-preserved hamlets in the Reggio Emilia area and is of environmental and architectural interest. Access is restricted; there is a car park at the entrance to the hamlet. Anyone visiting Bergogno should take this access situation into account when planning their day. Lago dei Pini is a natural area with public access. Parco Pineta, in the heart of Casina, also complements the landscape experience. It features an open-air theatre for summer events and performances.

The Natura 2000 site IT4030018 includes Casina. From Leguigno, the view extends across the peaks of Parco del Gigante and the valleys below, as well as across the Val d'Enza area as far as Parma. The parish church of San Giovanni Battista in Leguigno is accessible; the area in front of it is surfaced with gravel.

Culture, crafts and regional traditions

Casina's cultural side also includes smaller discoveries full of character. The 18th-century church in Cortogno is dedicated to Saint George, San Giorgio. Ars Canusina refers to the handicrafts of the ancient lands of Matilde di Canossa and is inspired by the Romanesque ornamental motifs of the Matildic area. It protects the original production criteria for embroidery, ceramics, leather, repoussé metalwork, and low reliefs in wood and stone.

A culinary highlight is the Fiera del Parmigiano Reggiano, held in Casina on the first weekend of August. In one edition, held from 1 to 4 August, the programme included tastings, show cooking, a market, entertainment and historical re-enactments. Those who enjoy combining their trip with regional cuisine and events will find another factor to consider when choosing their travel dates.
