Accommodation in Villa Minozzo
Villa Minozzo lies in the upper Reggio Apennines between the ridge of Monte Cusna and the valleys of the Dolo and Secchia. The municipality is part of the Appennino tosco-emiliano National Park and, since 2015, of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. The town therefore combines striking landscapes, nature experiences and a distinctive culture, which you can consider as different focal points for your stay when choosing your holiday apartment.
Karst landscape and Apennine trails
A special feature is the Gessi Triassici. They formed around 200 million years ago through the evaporation of salty seawater. Today, this area features sinkholes, swallow holes and underground caves. The CAI created the Sentiero naturalistico dei Gessi Triassici to raise awareness of the landscape and its flora and fauna. Those who wish to combine geological formations and nature observation when planning their trip will find an additional reason here to consider Villa Minozzo more closely as a holiday destination.
The Prati di Sara are almost level high-mountain meadows at an altitude of 1,610 metres at the foot of Monte Cusna. Beech forest surrounds this open landscape. From Passo Cisa, the meadows can be reached via CAI trails 623 and 625 in about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Another hiking idea starts in the hamlet of La Romita on CAI trail 603: the route to Monte Giovarello passes through sweet chestnut groves, beech forests and an extensive high-mountain meadow. From the summit, you can look out over the Pietra di Bismantova, the Apuan Alps and the Serchio Valley in the Garfagnana.
For a less hiking-oriented day, Le Fonti di Poiano are suitable for a picnic and a relaxing stay. The Febbio ski resort is another possible destination for an excursion and offers 20 kilometres of downhill slopes.
Culture, theatre and regional cuisine
The history of the area includes the settlement of Minozzo, which preserves fragments of the walls of its ancient Rocca. The Chiesa di Santa Maria has survived on the northern side of the settlement. In the ancient Rocca of Villa Minozzo, the Galleria del Maggio Drammatico preserves stage materials and costumes. Maggio Drammatico continues to be performed every summer in Villa Minozzo by various local theatre groups. If you would like to plan your stay around this tradition, summer may play a particularly important role in your travel planning.
The Mostra antichi mestieri in the rooms of the ancient Rocca offers further insights into the local heritage. It displays photographs and objects representing traditional occupations. In the municipal library, the Sala dell’affresco displays a 16th-century fresco depicting the Madonna di Loreto. These places provide a cultural contrast to the hiking trails and also make Villa Minozzo interesting for trips where nature and history stand side by side.
Traditional Villa Minozzo cuisine includes Gnocco fritto with cold cuts and cheese, Erbazzone, Cappelletti, potato or herb tortelli, as well as recipes featuring Parmigiano Reggiano, game, chestnuts and porcini mushrooms. Ingredients from the surrounding area are often used for these dishes. Regional specialities can therefore be part of your travel considerations just as much as the choice between active days in the mountains and cultural discoveries.
Active excursions and practical information
In the regulated fishing area of the Torrente Dolo near Civago, sport fishing for Mediterranean trout is possible at an altitude of over 1,000 metres. The regulated area extends from the section 1.5 kilometres upstream from the bridge of the SP 96 Villa Minozzo–Piandelagotti, through the section 1.5 kilometres downstream from the bridge, to the confluence with the Torrente Riaccio. A special fishing permit is required for fishing in the regulated sections.
The route from Castelnovo ne' Monti to Abetina Reale is also suitable for horseback riding or mountain biking. It follows the SP 9 through Villa Minozzo towards Valle del Secchia. The road section, initially paved and then unpaved, is open to traffic for approximately 10 kilometres and is suitable for both activities. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore first decide whether hiking trails, culture, the fishing area, cycling or a quieter landscape experience should be the focus of your stay. You can then align your choice of location more precisely with your own daily plans.
