Tossignano: Rocca, Rocky Landscape and Trails
Accommodation in Tossignano
Tossignano combines an impressive rocky landscape with a history that is immediately present in the townscape. Between the Rocca, Palazzo Baronale, old entrances and scenic trails, you will find different ways to shape your stay: culturally, through the landscape or as part of a longer hiking stage. When choosing suitable accommodation, it is therefore particularly useful to consider which aspects you want to focus on during your trip.
Discover the Rocca and the town's history
A good starting point for exploring Tossignano's historical side is the Museo della Vena del Gesso Romagnola. It is located in Piazza Andrea Costa, inside the historic Palazzo Baronale. This places a specific cultural destination right at the heart of the town's history, which can then be explored further on a walk. The Porta Raimondi is an ancient entrance to Tossignano and adds to the picture of the town's former importance.
The Rocca di Tossignano was built by the Bolognese in 1256 on the remains of earlier fortifications. In 1537–1538, it was finally destroyed on the orders of Pope Paul III Farnese. Today, its history is one of the defining themes of a stay in Tossignano. The Rocca can be reached on foot via Via Don Angelo Bughetti or from the main square. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Vena del Gesso and the Santerno Valley.
The Church of San Girolamo also adds to a culturally focused day. It began as an oratory, was later extended lengthwise and converted into a church. Near the upper part of the town, an ancient selenite quarry has also been preserved to this day. These various landmarks can be included as individual discoveries in your daily plans, without having to dedicate your entire stay to a single attraction.
Rocky landscapes and trails around Tossignano
The Riva di San Biagio is an imposing cliff on the southern slope of the Vena del Gesso Romagnola, between the Sella di Ca' Budrio and Tossignano Alta. It is clearly visible from the hill with the Rocca ruins above Tossignano Alta. In addition to the view of the Rocca, this provides another scenic point of reference that illustrates the area's distinctive geology.
If you would like to explore the area on foot, CAI Trail 705 passes by the Riva di San Biagio. Variant 705b reaches its summit at Passo della Prè. A further long-distance perspective is offered by Stage 16 of the Alta Via dei Parchi, which runs almost entirely along the ridge of the Vena del Gesso. This allows you to choose between a locally focused trail and a longer stage through the ridge landscape.
For pilgrims and hikers, Stage 12 of the Cammino di Sant'Antonio is described particularly specifically: it leads from Tossignano to Parco Naturale del Carnè over 22 km, with an additional 4 km to Brisighella. The stage passes through the Vena del Gesso Romagnola park and reaches Rifugio Ca' Carnè via the White Road of Monte Mauro. Take the distance into account when planning and choose your accommodation according to whether it suits your personal travel rhythm and the stages you have planned.
Circular trails, traditions and suitable days out
For a differently structured excursion, there is a circular trail in Parco di San Mamante. It passes a viewpoint overlooking the Gola del Tramosasso. The trail follows the path to Casetto di Sansone and then returns to Piazza Andrea Costa via Via Castiglione and Vicolo Saldoni. This allows you to plan a day combining landscape, views and a renewed connection with the town.
The Festa della Polenta is also part of Tossignano's distinctive heritage. It has been celebrated since 1 February 1622, with the exception of the years 1942 to 1945. The festival's long history makes local tradition an interesting subject for travellers who want to discover the town's culinary side as well as its trails and architectural history.
When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Tossignano, you can therefore first weigh up different travel ideas: Focus on Piazza Andrea Costa, the museum, Rocca and church, plan a circular trail or make one of the longer stages the centrepiece of your trip. This decision helps you choose accommodation as a base for your preferred daily rhythm, without limiting the trip to a single experience.
