Altedo combines tangible history with an agriculturally shaped setting and a variety of ideas for planning a trip. Those looking for a holiday apartment as a base can combine culture, cycling, regional specialties and individual leisure activities. Particularly appealing are the town’s specific historical traces and the 14-kilometre cycle path connecting Altedo with Pegola and Malalbergo.

Historical Discoveries in Altedo

One of the most distinctive buildings is Torre Gnudi. The tower is approximately six metres high and has a footprint of no more than 4.5 metres. Its lower section was used as an icehouse during the first years of the 19th century. Torre Gnudi can be viewed from the outside; access to the interior is not possible. This makes it particularly suitable as a specific sightseeing point for travellers who want to discover local history not only through dates, but also through preserved buildings.

The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista also offers points of cultural and historical interest. The church houses a 16th-century painting attributed to the Bolognese painter Prospero Fontana. The bell tower also contains a clock made in 1734 by Carlantonio Facchini, which shows the time with only one hand. Despite numerous restorations, the church has retained its external architectural lines. At the Locanda Napoleone, the town’s history continues on a secular level: the 18th-century building was commissioned by Count Ferdinando Marescalchi; in 1795, following a reorganisation of the stagecoach stops on the Bologna–Ferrara route, it became a post station.

Near Altedo are also the remains of a rural Roman building. They came to light in spring 1992 during the installation of the Minerbio–Cortemaggiore gas pipeline. Those interested in older traces of settlement will find another historical point of reference in the surrounding area.

Cycle Path, Canal and Regional Landscape

The cycle path between Malalbergo and Altedo is 14 kilometres long and runs through an agriculturally shaped landscape. Valuable asparagus is grown in this area. One section follows the Navile Canal, adding a scenic element to route planning. For travellers with different interests, this can make for a good division of activities: while some of the group explore historical sites, others can spend a day cycling with views of fields and the canal. The length of the route should be taken into account when planning the day individually.

Asparagus, Water and Special Excursion Destinations

The regional cuisine is showcased particularly during the Sagra dell'Asparago Verde. This festival is held in Altedo during the third and fourth weeks of May and offers an opportunity to sample specialties made with green asparagus from Altedo. For spring travel planning, this period is therefore a seasonal point of reference in its own right.

Aquafitness is offered at the Piscina di Altedo. Those who would like to include a physical activity alongside culture and cycling during their stay will find another option here. The privately owned Valle La Comune wetland oasis is also located in the municipality of Malalbergo. It is accessible only by prior arrangement with the owners. This access requirement must be taken into account when planning.

Choosing Altedo as a Base

When travelling from Bologna, take the A13 to the Altedo exit, then follow a local road to the SS 64 Porrettana northwards towards Malalbergo. Bus route 356 also connects Bologna, Altedo, Malalbergo and Ferrara. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore first decide whether the focus should be on Altedo’s historical sights, the cycle path, the asparagus festival or a combination of these experiences. Other places for regional searches include Sacerno, Castel Del Rio, Tossignano, Mordano, Monteveglio, Ripoli, Porretta Terme and Zappolino.
