Castel Del Rio: Bridge, Chestnut Forests and Culture
Accommodation in Castel Del Rio
Castel Del Rio combines impressive architectural history with a landscape of ancient forests and chestnut groves. Ponte Alidosi brings the town’s history to life through its extraordinary bridge design; the higher slopes offer a different perspective on the surrounding area. The town also has museums, historic church architecture, and opportunities for hiking, cycling and seasonal river canoeing.
Bridge, Palazzo and Museums
Ponte Alidosi has a humpback design with a single span of 42 metres and a rise of 19 metres. Obizzo Alidosi commissioned the bridge in 1499. Its striking shape and precise dimensions make it one of the distinctive buildings through which the town’s history can be explored.
Palazzo Alidosi has stood at the centre of Castel Del Rio for over 450 years. The Palazzo houses the Museo del Castagno. Its educational tour traces the world of the chestnut tree and its relationship with people; old tools and soil samples are also on display. The museum thus links local chestnut culture with insights into work and the landscape.
On the hill west of the town stands Castellaccio, the surviving ruin of the Alidosi family’s first residence. It was built at the beginning of the 13th century. Chiesa di Valmaggiore provides a very different architectural accent: its distinctive glass roof was preserved through a restoration in 1997.
Those interested in more recent history will find a collection of around 1,600 items at the Museo della Guerra e della Linea Gotica. These include weapons, uniforms, insignia, documents and photographs. The varied materials give a visit to this museum a different focus from the tour of chestnut culture at the Palazzo.
Chestnut Landscapes and Seasonal Festivals
The higher slopes of Castel Del Rio are home to ancient forests and chestnut groves. The lush chestnut forests are particularly well suited to trekking, cycling and mountain biking. Visitors who enjoy spending time outdoors will find several ways to stay active here, while the buildings and museums offer a cultural and historical counterpoint.
Marrone di Castel del Rio IGP chestnuts are medium to large in size. Their flesh is white and crisp, with a pleasantly sweet taste. The Sagra del Marrone takes place every Sunday in October. Castel Del Rio also hosts the Feste Rinascimentali between June and July. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the exact event dates in advance.
Plan a Hike and River Activities
CAI hiking trail 707 passes through Castel Del Rio and is 8.7 kilometres long. In April 2026, it was reported to be open to hikers. Check trail conditions before setting out so you do not mistake its status at that time for an update for your travel date.
Canoeing on the Santerno is available for a limited period: from February to April, and possibly into May. The activities therefore differ not only in focus but also in season. If you are planning a trip that includes hiking or canoeing, it is worth considering these periods alongside your preferred travel dates.
When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether architectural and museum history or activities in the forest and on the river will be the main focus of your trip.
