Calcara brings together theater, church art and a river landscape with a history of its own. Cultural landmarks include Teatro Calcara, the parish church of San Nicolò, and paintings in the Loggia d'onore of Villa Nicolaj. Parco del Taglio and other green spaces add a natural accent. This combination lets you explore the town from different perspectives: through its cultural sites, historical imagery and changes to the river.

Theater History and Cultural Program

The Teatro Calcara building was constructed in 1911 as the Casa del Popolo. Since 2006, the theater has had an auditorium with 99 seats, as well as new sound and lighting systems. Its program includes a main season of performances, daily theater workshops, exhibitions, events, festivals, concerts and artist residencies. In Calcara, the building’s historical origins meet a wide-ranging cultural program. If you would like to make a performance a fixed part of your stay, check the specific dates in advance. Workshops and exhibitions offer other themes to consider when planning.

Church and Art History

Calcara’s parish church is dedicated to San Nicolò and already existed before the 13th century. Its altarpiece depicting the Mysteries of the Rosary is said to have been painted by Bartolomeo Cesi in 1610. Paintings in the Loggia d'onore of Villa Nicolaj depict places and battles from the War of the Spanish Succession. The subjects offer a clear contrast: the church’s religious theme is followed by historical places and scenes of war in the villa’s paintings. Calcara thus offers different ways to explore art history, from sacred imagery to depictions of a European conflict.

Parco del Taglio and the River Landscape

Parco del Taglio was named after a cut made through a large bend in the river in 1806, which changed the course of the waterway. The Il Taglio river park includes the floodplain beside the park of Villa Turrini Rossi (now Villa Nicolaj) and is home to centuries-old oaks. Here, different timescales come together: the cut was a dated intervention in the river’s course, while the old oaks are part of a landscape shaped over a long period. The park can therefore be viewed not only as a green space, but also in connection with changes to the watercourse.

The Passerella del Taglio connects Parco del Taglio with Parco dell'Albero Azzurro on the opposite bank of the Samoggia. A small cycle path leads to other green spaces in Calcara. These offer different points of reference for planning: the Passerella marks a specific connection between two parks, while the cycle path leads to additional green spaces. This allows you to distinguish between a named park connection and a cycling route toward more greenery, without combining them into a single route.

Choosing Between Culture and the River Landscape

When planning a trip together, you can clearly weigh up your interests: theater and art provide a cultural focus, while Parco del Taglio, the park connection and the cycle path bring the river landscape and green spaces to the fore. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Calcara, you can first decide which of these focuses you would like to shape your stay. If a performance is a fixed part of your plans, it makes sense to check the dates in advance; the landscape offers a different approach to planning your days.
