Melissa is situated on a rocky spur a few kilometres from the sea. The settlement is laid out in terraces on a rocky hill, while vineyards and gentle hills shape the landscape along the approach. Narrow lanes and medieval heritage

The historic centre is criss-crossed by narrow lanes. After parking your car, you can explore these paths only on foot, making it notably different to navigate the town centre from driving through the terraced settlement. The medieval heritage can be seen in the massive town walls and the remains of an old castle. The remains of Melissa Castle with three round towers are located on the upper rocky ridge. The Chiesa di San Giacomo is also situated in the upper part of the town. It is the oldest church in Melissa, dates from the early Middle Ages and probably formed the starting point for the first settlement core of the historic centre around its original structure, a so-called pieve.

Churches, museums and traditional craft history

The Chiesa della Madonna dell'Audienza was built in 1672 on the summit of the rocky hill outside the walls. The Chiesa di San Nicola, one of Melissa's oldest buildings, also stands in the historic town centre. It is located on a square that was the centre of activities and the heart of the community for centuries. The Museo del Vino is located near the Chiesa di San Giacomo. Next to the Chiesa di San Giacomo is the Vecchio Frantoio Oleario, where the traditional process of cold extraction of olive oil can be traced. A photography museum dedicated to the artist Ernesto Treccani complements the cultural attractions.

Wine, cuisine and festivals

Melissa's traditional cuisine includes Sardella, homemade pasta with meat or legume sauces, including the Metiturisca typical of the harvest season, as well as Stigliole and salt cod with peppers. Because of its wine production, Melissa belongs to the Città del Vino network. In the area around Melissa, wine tastings at local wineries are among the activities mentioned. The most important religious festival in the centre of Melissa is the festival in honour of San Francesco di Paola. It takes place from 1 to 3 August and includes three days of processions, a marching band made up of children and young people from Melissa, traditional games and music. In the first days of August, the Festa del Grano is also held in the hamlet of Mannà, with food stalls and musical performances.

Torre Melissa: coast and local history

Torre Melissa is a district of Melissa that is particularly geared towards beach tourism. There is clear water and a beach of very fine sand with gravel sections. The district is also home to the Torre Aragonese, a fortified tower from the 16th-century Aragonese period. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore decide which focus you prefer: the town centre stands for lanes, churches, museums and historical evidence, while Torre Melissa represents the coast, beach and a view of another aspect of the municipality. The Museo della Civiltà Contadina di Melissa displays agricultural and pastoral tools, reconstructed rural living spaces, as well as exhibits on weaving and ceramics.
