Holiday Apartment in Marina Di Strongoli: Coast, Culture and Pilgrimage Tradition
Marina di Strongoli is a coastal town with around seven kilometres of coastline and notable links to sacred and ancient sites. Directly by the sea is the Church of Santa Teresa d’Avila; it was founded in 1986.
Coast and landscape between Pantano and Santa Focà
The coast of Marina di Strongoli stretches for around seven kilometres. A specific beach setting can be found at Spiaggia di Pantano: there, the sand is a fine ivory colour. Spiaggia di Santa Focà lies within the Valle del Neto and is designated as a landscape area in Calabria’s Landscape Plan. The surrounding area therefore combines a coastal setting with an explicitly designated landscape area.
A bridge to Santa Focà
Another specific local connection is the bridge over the Torrente Survolo. It connects Marina di Strongoli with the village of Santa Focà. The work on the bridge included a ground-level footpath protected by safety barriers. This means that the connection between Marina di Strongoli and Santa Focà is also part of the local setting when locating your holiday apartment.
Madonna di Vergadoro and religious tradition
Perched on a hill, the Santuario Madonna di Vergadoro overlooks Marina di Strongoli. Every year in May, during the ten days before the Feast of the Ascension, pilgrims go there to spend an entire night in prayer. This night of prayer is called “a nottata”. The celebrations in honour of Madonna di Vergadoro in Strongoli Marina also include a programme of prayers, masses and a traditional procession on the sea. Those interested in religious traditions will find a recurring event here that is clearly linked in time to May and the Feast of the Ascension.
Church and Roman mausoleum
The Church of Santa Teresa d’Avila is located directly by the sea and was founded in 1986. The Pietra del Tesauro is a Roman mausoleum in the form of a cuboid made of red bricks and one of the few Roman mausoleums in Calabria. It lies south of Marina di Strongoli in the area of Pizzuta di Giunti, a few metres from a provincial road and not far from the Neto River. Alongside the sacred presence, there is therefore also a clearly recognisable ancient structure with its own spatial connection to the landscape.
For families with different interests, the choice between a holiday apartment and a holiday house in Marina di Strongoli can therefore begin with a specific focus: coast and sand, landscape, religious dates or Roman history. The sites and events open up several ways to choose the focus of your holiday and align the type of accommodation with your personal travel plans.
