Praia a Mare: Dino Island, Coast and Culture

Praia a Mare lies where the mountains of Pollino National Park reach the sea. The approximately five-kilometre-long coast alternates between freely accessible beaches and equipped beach sections.

Sea, Island Nature and Dino Island

Dino Island lies opposite Capo dell’Arena, covers approximately 50 hectares and reaches a maximum height of 100 metres. The erosion of the rock has created several sea caves on the island. Dino Island is designated as a Natura 2000 site of Community importance (SAC); the designation dates from June 2017. Its limestone cliffs are home to Calabria’s largest population of Primula palinuri, an endemic species with a small distribution range.

Access to Dino Island is possible only from the side facing the coast. Small boats can dock at a landing stage there and bring people ashore.

Culture, Art and Buildings in Praia a Mare

The statue of Madonna della Grotta is carried in a procession through Praia a Mare every year for three days, from 14 August to 16 August. The Museo Comunale di Praia a Mare houses a permanent collection of modern and contemporary art with more than 200 works donated by Italian and international artists.

The Santuario Madonna della Grotta is a place of worship in Praia a Mare at the foot of Monte Vingiolo, approximately 90 metres above sea level. Torre di Fiuzzi dates from the 16th century and is 12 metres high. It was connected to the watchtower at the western end of Dino Island and, together with it, served to transmit warnings in case of danger. Castello dei Marchesi Cosentini d’Ajeta is located in the Bay of Fiuzzi, 91 metres above sea level, opposite Dino Island.

Palazzo Esposizioni serves as an information centre for tourists and visitors exploring Praia a Mare. Cultural events and activities are also organised at Palazzo Esposizioni. At the “Camping Internazionale/Punta Fiuzzi” point, the Blue Flag for Praia a Mare was scheduled to fly for the tenth time in 2025.

Water Sports, Flight Experiences and Activities

Aqua Experience Praia offers sailing courses in the waters around Dino Island. It also offers SUP excursions with certified guides, as well as pedal boat and Big SUP equipment rental.

During tandem paragliding flights with FlyTirreno, passengers are accompanied by a professional flight instructor from the Ae.C. Riviera dei Cedri school. AquaFans is a small amusement park in Praia a Mare with daily events and shows.
