Historic Places between the Town Centre and the Sea

The historic centre of Longobardi is an agriculturally shaped town centre dating from the first quarter of the 7th century. The Santi Quaranta coastal watchtower is still in fairly good condition and is situated in a scenic location overlooking the sea. Sea views and the village character represent two distinct aspects of the town.

The Chiesa Matrice of Longobardi was built in 1759 in the Baroque style and is dedicated to Saint Domenica, virgin and martyr. The birthplace of San Nicola Saggio was converted into an oratory in 1786. The Chiesa Matrice is characterised by its year of construction, Baroque style and dedication, while the birthplace is defined by its later use as an oratory.

The Church of San Francesco di Paola has two marble statues of Saint Francis of Paola and Saint Innocenza. The two marble statues complement the sacred architecture with specific works of art.

Garden, Forest and Trail Landscape

Palazzo Miceli includes the 1,200 m² Giardino di San Nicola, with a communal oven, a communal De.Co. garden and an area with historic fruit trees. The grounds combine communal facilities with an area of historic fruit trees.

Longobardi's natural side is reflected in the pine forest with several springs, including the Pagliarone Spring. The pine forest is visited by day-trippers at Easter and in summer. Longobardi's forested area extends from the hamlet of Le Pera to the slopes of Monte Cocuzzo.

The Sentiero di San Nicola Saggio is a path approximately 1,500 m long. It begins near the old SS 18 at Tre Ponti, follows a section of paved road to the birthplace of San Nicola Saggio in the historic centre of Longobardi, and runs mostly through the Vallone Cordari. The start near Tre Ponti and the destination at the birthplace provide two specific points of reference along the route. The paved road section is explicitly part of the described route and should be taken into account when planning the day. The approximate length helps to consider the route as a separate trail section.

Local Specialities and Festival

The two locally designated varieties, povareddra and mascariaddru, are distinguished in Fasulu 'du Piru.

The annual Festival della Violetta is dedicated to the Melanzana Violetta. At the festival, the Melanzana Violetta is the focus as an individual vegetable variety.

Travelling by Train with Two Distances

For planning a train journey to Longobardi, Amantea railway station is 7 km away, while Paola railway station is 20 km away. Amantea is therefore the nearer of the two railway stations. The different distances can serve as an objective planning factor when choosing the station.
