Marsico Nuovo between Nature Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Marsico Nuovo
Marsico Nuovo is located on the western side of the upper Agri Valley at an altitude of 865 metres. The town combines a woodland landscape with impressive reminders of its history: springs, trails, churches, a historic building complex and a museum offer different opportunities for eventful days on holiday. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home can therefore choose between active excursions into nature, cultural discoveries and an annual historical walking tour.
Nature among forests, springs and trails
The Fontana delle Brecce–Piana del Lago nature complex lies within the Appennino Lucano Val d’Agri Lagonegrese National Park. Beech and Turkey oak forests characterise the area; there are also springs and seasonally flowing streams. This makes the landscape varied, without every activity having the same character. The area is suitable for hiking, cycling tourism and trekking.
One specific route begins at the Rifugio Fontana delle Brecce. From there, a path approximately 2 kilometres long leads through the woodland to a wooden bridge intended exclusively for pedestrians, which is connected to the village of Piana del Lago. Take this route into account when planning your day. Piana del Lago also has a body of water fed by local springs, as well as drainage channels with the character of streams.
For a different kind of exercise, Piana del Lago offers a level circular route approximately 1,000 metres long that is suitable for sporting activities throughout the year. This allows different interests to be taken into account when planning your trip: a longer route through the forest, a destination at a pedestrian bridge or a level circular route. Your choice of accommodation can be guided by whether you wish to focus primarily on nature experiences, culture or a combination of both.
Churches, palazzi and sacred art
Several historic sites await you in the townscape. The stone portal of the Chiesa di San Gianuario is supported by Corinthian-style columns and displays medieval bishops and abbots in bas-relief. The work has been declared a national monument. The same church also contains a medieval fresco from the Chiesa di San Francesco, which is among the oldest paintings in the area.
The Chiesa di San Giorgio e San Gianuario replaced the former Cathedral of San Michele Arcangelo. In 1131, Bishop Enrico and Count Goffredo Guarna had a new cathedral built at the present site in Romanesque forms. The Chiesa della Madonna del Carmine is attached to the Monastero di San Tommaso di Canterbury and dates from the 13th to the 14th century. It houses a 14th-century wooden sculpture of the Madonna and Child attributed to Giovanni di Nola.
The Palazzo Manzoni building complex also leads into the town’s earlier history. Guglielmo III Guarna founded it in 1179 originally as an Augustinian monastery; later, Ruggero Sanseverino converted it into a Benedictine convent. The monumental complex covers approximately 7,000 square metres and includes courtyards, paths and building remains surrounded by powerful stone walls. In addition, the Museo di arte sacra preserves and displays religious works of art and sacred objects of historical and artistic value.
History as a walking tour and local tradition
The Passeggiate nella Storia takes place every year in the second half of August in the old Civita district. The historical and gastronomic walking tour combines the town’s history with a special way of discovering it. The 2025 edition was the 25th edition and commemorated the visit of Saint Thomas Aquinas to Teodora. The Passeggiata nella Storia Marsico Medievale was planned with medieval settings and old inns serving traditional dishes. Those wishing to shape their trip around culture and cuisine will find here a distinctive reason to learn more about the town’s history.
Further historical traces can be found at the Fonte di San Giovanni. Two milestones from the Diocletian period and several funerary stelae dated to the 3rd century AD were found nearby. In the Middle Ages, the spring supplied water to the nearby Rocchetta of the Sanseverino counts. Another natural landmark is the Grotta di Castel di Lepre, considered the longest cave system in Basilicata and extending almost two kilometres through the mountain.
