Holiday apartment in Manduria: history, museums and Primitivo
Manduria is a destination for you if Messapian history, distinctive churches, Primitivo and local cuisine are among your interests. Museums and historic sites offer different perspectives, ranging from archaeological finds to memories of the world wars.
Experience Messapian history at the museum
The Museo Archeologico “Manduria, Terra di Messapi” is housed in a former Augustinian monastery. It displays archaeological finds from necropolises and settlement areas and documents the excavation of more than 1,200 graves in the ancient necropolis. From 15 July to 9 September 2026, you can take part in a guided tour on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. It focuses on the collections, significant artefacts, and the history of the Messapian civilisation and the Manduria area.
Primitivo and local cuisine
The Museo della Civiltà del Vino Primitivo presents the culture of Primitivo, from growing the vines to producing the wine. Its themed exhibition rooms are located in the underground wine cisterns of a 19th-century wine cellar. Wine tastings and tastings of dishes from the local culinary tradition give the museum visit an additional culinary focus.
Churches and unusual historical details
The Chiesa Madre della SS. Trinità has a richly decorated Renaissance portal and a large rose window. Its interior was expanded from three to five naves in the 18th century.
The Chiesa di San Pietro Mandurino consists of an upper chapel, probably dating from the 13th century, and an underground crypt from the 8th century. It is currently closed to the public due to ongoing work to consolidate and enhance the site.
Il Calvario in Manduria was built following a religious mission in 1839. Its mosaic is made of fragments of mirrors, porcelain, crockery, glass and shells.
Commemorative culture at the Museo Civico
The Museo Civico Manduria preserves memories of the First and Second World Wars in a former 18th-century Servite monastery. Two permanent exhibition rooms are each dedicated to one of the two world wars. A third room is used for temporary exhibitions, literary events, conferences and commemorative events.
Summer discoveries along the Messapian walls
In June, July, August and September, “Alla Scoperta della Storia” offers an immersive experience along the monumental walls, through the underground areas and to the Fonte Pliniano in the Parco Archeologico delle Mura Messapiche.
