The Riserve Naturali Regionali Orientate del Litorale Tarantino Orientale extend across 1,113 hectares and consist of two separate areas. The second part includes the coastal areas of the salt pans and dunes of Torre Colimena. This landscape combines beach, salt flats and dunes into a natural area with several clearly recognisable focal points.

The Salina dei Monaci is connected to the sea by a channel that allows water to circulate. At the same time, the ruins of a tower and the salt deposits of the Salina dei Monaci bear witness to the past of a flourishing market.

History and Cultural Discoveries

Torre Colimena is part of the coastal tower defence system commissioned by Emperor Charles V, which was intended to protect the Salento peninsula from frequent foreign incursions. Since summer 2021, the Museo delle Ceramiche has been housed inside Torre Colimena.

The historic site of Torre della Salina is located near Torre Colimena. Mount Monte della Marina and Spiaggia delle Paludi del Conte beach are also nearby. The surrounding area also includes the historic site Ex Monastero dei Padri Benedettini d'Aversa, the ancient site Sito Archeologico di Scalo di Furno and the Museo di Biologia Marina museum.
