Martinsicuro combines an extensive coastline with rare encounters with nature and a surprisingly multifaceted history. Of its 6,300 metres of coastline, 55 percent consists of free beach; in addition, the townscape includes a section with a coastal wetland. Here, dunes form naturally, and the Kentish plover, known as Fratino in Italian, returns to the wetland’s beaches every year to breed. For planning your trip, this gives you a clear choice between days at the beach, observing nature and exploring the history of the Tronto area.

Coast and routes for different kinds of holiday days

A municipal cycle and pedestrian path leads from the banks of the Tronto River and the migratory bird oasis via the small fishing landing stage and the Martinsicuro seafront to the coastal wetland. It then continues to the seafront of Villa Rosa and as far as the mouth of the Val Vibrata. Anyone wishing to combine exercise and scenery can take this route into account when planning their day. Along the way, the route touches on different sides of Martinsicuro: the riverbank, fishing, the promenade, the wetland and the coast.

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Martinsicuro, it is therefore worth deciding in advance what you want to focus on. Should your holiday centre mainly on the coast and the natural dunes, or would you also like to make time for museums, archaeology and maritime traditions? The town’s features allow for both types of trip, without requiring you to limit yourself to just one way of exploring.

Archaeology at the Antiquarium

The Castrum Truentinum Antiquarium is housed in the fully restored Casa Doganale. It displays archaeological finds from the Colle di Marzio area and the mouth of the Tronto. The collection ranges from the protohistoric period to the Imperial era, thereby bringing several periods of the town’s history to life. Among the notable exhibits is a Lombard tomb containing finds from the 6th and 7th centuries AD, discovered in the area of the Tronto River in Martinsicuro.

The excavations in the area of the Roman town of Castrum Truentinum also testify to the site’s earlier importance. The first excavations, carried out from 1991 to 1995, uncovered a commercial district with harbour warehouses, a public building—the “macellum”, or market—and an almost intact paved road. Anyone interested in Roman history will find tangible architectural remains here rather than a purely abstract historical narrative. Colle di Marzio is also protected as an archaeological site for protohistoric and Roman finds.

Fishing and maritime memories

In the area of the small harbour, where the fishermen’s boats moor, five rooms display fishing nets, fish traps, winches, baskets, buoys, compasses, old radar equipment, nautical charts and photographs. The Ecomuseo del Mare e della Pesca also uses photographs and objects provided by older fishermen to document the history and various forms of fishing in Martinsicuro. This collection complements the archaeological perspective with the more recent maritime past.

Historical details can also be found on the building’s façade aedicule, with the heraldic insignia of Emperor Charles V, including the Habsburg double-headed eagle. This means that a stay in Martinsicuro can be shaped according to your interests: around coastal scenery and the wetland, Roman archaeological sites or memories of the fishing industry.
