Nereto combines an asymmetrical medieval townscape with unusual church forms, traditional customs and local dishes. Its themes range from two church façades facing in opposite directions to an amateur sport whose rules and origin stories are passed down from generation to generation. This gives travelers different ways to explore the town’s history and cultural life.

Townscape and Architectural History

The center of Nereto lies slightly higher than the rest of the town. Its asymmetrical medieval layout extends around Piazza Cavour. Asymmetrical here means that the layout does not follow a mirrored design; Piazza Cavour remains its named focal point. This combination of a square and an irregular layout shapes the description of the town center.

The Chiesa Maria SS.ma del Suffragio has been documented since 1676 and today has the appearance of a 19th-century renovation. Its two separated façades, which stand at right angles to each other and both look like main façades, are particularly striking. The building therefore cannot be reduced to a single representative front. The mother church of Nereto also contains frescoes by Giuseppe Toscani depicting the “Miracle of Our Lady of Consolation.”

A different historical story is associated with the octagonal Chiesa di San Rocco. It was built outside Nereto in the 17th century as a symbolic place of protection from the plague and was reserved for plague victims. Its particular function is therefore part of a different aspect of the town’s history from the architectural forms in the center. The Paialonga Hut in Contrada Crocetta also offers a glimpse far back in time: it is the remains of a Neolithic dwelling.

Traditions and Event Dates

“Lancio del Formaggio” is an amateur sporting tradition passed down from generation to generation in Nereto. What is handed down includes not only the rules of the game, but also its origins and the explanations associated with them. This makes the tradition an example of how local knowledge is preserved beyond the activity itself.

In September, the Settembrata Neretese includes a tasting of the traditional Abruzzese dish “Capra alla Neretese.” Check the current dates before your trip.

Local Cuisine and Choosing Your Holiday Apartment

“Tacchino alla Neretese” is part of Nereto’s local cuisine. The two culinary references play different roles: Tacchino is mentioned as part of the local cuisine, while Capra alla Neretese is tasted as a traditional dish at the September event. Together with the church art and traditional customs, they give your travel planning a clear cultural focus.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Nereto, you can first consider which themes you want to shape your stay: the townscape and architectural history, local traditions, or an event period. The architecture and local history are not tied to the festival months mentioned; for a trip planned around the Settembrata Neretese or the Estate Neretese, however, the current dates matter. This lets you align your travel dates with your interests without confusing the different historical and seasonal themes.
