Civita D'Antino combines an impressive elevation with unusual evidence of history, art and archaeology. The town is situated on a plateau 904 metres above sea level, offering views across the entire Valle Roveto. It is also home to a cemetery of notable cultural and historical significance, an archaeological museum, a fortress tower open to visitors and trails suited to different travel plans. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Civita D'Antino can therefore shape their stay around exploring the town, enjoying the views and spending days hiking.

Culture and History in Civita D'Antino

One of the most unusual sights is the Cimitero Napoleonico. It is one of the very few national examples of cemetery architecture and the only example in Abruzzo that complies with the strict requirements of the 1804 Edict of Saint-Cloud. This edict was extended to the Italian territories in 1806. The cemetery is therefore a destination for visitors who want to experience architecture not only in palaces and churches, but also through a special form of memorial culture.

The Museo Archeologico Antinum takes visitors further back in time. It displays votive terracottas from Via Manzoni, as well as a collection of tableware from the late Republican period found on Via Genova. The Roman past is also associated with Antinum: following the Social War in the 1st century BC, the Romans elevated the town to the status of a municipium. A museum visit can thus be combined with an exploration of the area's historical development, without reducing Civita D'Antino to a single era.

Several buildings in the town bear witness to different cultural layers. The fortress tower associated with the Colonna family has a U-shaped, bluntly square structure and is open to visitors today. Palazzo Ferrante is a significant surviving historic building in the heart of Civita D'Antino. Casa dei Pittori preserves 89 coats of arms belonging to artists who document the artistic period of the Zahrtmann School. A guesthouse became the home of this school founded by the Danish master Kristian Zahrtmann, which was visited by many artists. Edward Lear also stayed in Civita D'Antino in 1843.

Those interested in longer hiking projects can also consider the Grande Cammino dei Briganti. The route passes through Civita D'Antino and forms part of a 500-kilometre long-distance trail designed to be completed over 28 hiking days. The trail passes through the five regions of Abruzzo, Lazio, Molise, Campania and Basilicata.

Another unusual experience is offered by the Osservatorio Astronomico Torre Colonna. Its approach combines astronomy, geophysics, geology and geography. Together with the view from the 904-metre-high plateau, this creates a travel experience that is not limited to classic sightseeing. If you are travelling with varied interests, you can alternate cultural discoveries, a shorter day hike and a geoastronomical perspective.
