Mascioni on Lake Campotosto
Accommodation in Mascioni
Mascioni lies on a small hill on the shore of Lake Campotosto, within the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. The lake, the village’s setting, and the mountain landscape each offer a different focus for a stay. You can use these to guide your choice of vacation rental: would you mainly like to explore the village, go hiking, or plan activities on the lake? These priorities lead to different daily itineraries, even though they all start from the same destination.
Village Character and Chapel
Cobbled lanes and stone houses in the typical architectural style of Abruzzo define Mascioni and blend into the surrounding landscape. So, alongside its lakeside setting, the village itself is also a focus for a stay. A chapel dedicated to Blessed Andrea da Montereale stands near his birthplace. It adds a specific cultural point of interest in the village to the landscape experiences. The architecture and chapel give exploring Mascioni a different focus from the hiking stages in the lake area.
Hiking in the Lake Area
The Cammino nelle Terre Mutate includes a 14-kilometer stage from Campotosto to Mascioni, taking about five hours. The route climbs to the summit plateau of Monte Mascioni. Before setting out, check the route and the exact viewpoint locally.
There are also several hiking options in the Lake Campotosto area: three trails in the lake area pass by the lake, including the Campotosto–Mascioni and Mascioni–Collebrincioni stages of the Cammino nelle Terre Mutate. The Carta dei Sentieri del Lago di Campotosto project created a hiking map in 2021–2022, distributed free of charge in the surrounding area, and improved a large part of the trail network. The map includes short descriptions of some trails and useful information about accommodation, transport, and health services in Italian and English. Check the conditions of the relevant trails before setting out on a hike.
Water Activities and Longer Tours
In the wider regional area, a 54-kilometer e-bike loop around Lake Campotosto offers an additional option for a longer tour. At 54 kilometers, it is considerably longer than the 14-kilometer stage from Campotosto to Mascioni; it is also a loop, whereas the other is a stage leading to the village. Canoeing is permitted on Lake Campotosto, but the municipality does not currently organize this activity. If you plan to paddle, take this distinction into account when planning your day.
Choose a Vacation Rental to Suit Your Daily Itinerary
A tour like this gives the day a different focus from exploring the village lanes and chapel. If you would like to combine several activities, this distinction can help you decide how to allocate your days and shape your stay around your preferred pace of travel.
