Verrecchie: Discover the Watermill, the Imele Source and Trails
Accommodation in Verrecchie
Verrecchie combines a restored watermill, the source of the Imele River and several varied trails. This makes the village interesting if you would like to combine nature experiences with insights into the rural history of Abruzzo. When choosing a holiday apartment in Verrecchie, you can plan your trip according to whether a cultural visit, exploring a trail or a scenic excursion is your main focus.
Watermill and Museum on the Imele River
The recently restored old watermill of Verrecchie is located at the foot of Monte Padiglione on the Imele River. In the past, it was an economic centre for the residents of numerous surrounding villages. Today, the restored mill houses the Museo della civiltà contadina. Photographs and equipment are displayed there, while manuscripts, documents, maps and books on local history are also kept there.
The museum conveys the traditional rural occupations and customs of Abruzzo. For your trip planning, this creates a good opportunity to consciously combine nature and culture: After engaging with the history of the village, you can turn your attention to the waterways and trails around Verrecchie. This also makes it possible to plan a day around different interests with children, without every activity having to be of the same nature.
Imele Source, Ovido and Distinctive Landscape Features
The source of the Imele River can be reached via the road to the left of the old mill. There, the water emerges between the rocks and continues flowing towards the mill. Along its course, the Imele passes through Natura 2000 sites and protected areas such as the Sirente Velino Regional Nature Park.
Another distinctive natural feature is the Ovido di Verrecchie, also known as the “Pozzo dei Piccioni”. It is a 100-metre-high shaft formed by a 30-metre waterfall of the Capacqua River. The shaft is inhabited by bats; the Capacqua River rises in the mountains near Cappadocia.
Trails for Different Day Plans
Several routes offer different possibilities. The route “Non solo canyoning: per l'antico mulino al pozzo dell'Ovido” leads from Petrella Liri via a stretch initially described as a track and then as a gravel road to Verrecchie and towards the source of the Imele River.
Itinerario n. 4 begins at the mill in Verrecchie and leads to the ruins of the Rocca on Monte a Corte at an altitude of 1,100 metres. The trail then runs near the source of the Imele River. Another excursion to Monte Padiglione begins and ends in Verrecchie, passes over the Passo delle Fossette and climbs along a scenic ridge overlooking the Valle della Dogana. This allows you to plan your day according to the type of trail you prefer and, when searching for a holiday apartment, consider whether you would like to focus primarily on culture, the landscape around the springs or mountain views.
The Cammino di San Tommaso from Cappadocia to Tagliacozzo also leads to the mill in the hamlet of Verrecchie, continues through the small village towards Piccola Svizzera and then on to Tagliacozzo. For other places in the same navigation area, you can compare Mascioni, Cansano, Paganica, Balsorano Nuovo, Rocca Pia, Campotosto, Coppito and Ortona dei Marsi.
