Torrevecchia Teatina combines cultural discoveries with a hilly landscape that gently slopes down towards the Alento River. Vineyards, olive groves and vegetable cultivation alternate with dense vegetation and individual farmhouses. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home for a varied stay can choose between museum days, landscape experiences and active excursions here.

Letters, Palazzi and Abruzzese Traditions

A special point of interest is the Museo della Lettera d'Amore in the historic Palazzo Valignani, dating from the 18th century. The museum preserves around 25,000 letters from the competition of the same name and from donated collections of correspondence. Around 3,500 letters from believers to Pope John Paul II are also on permanent display. This collection gives the town an unusual cultural profile and is a specific focus for an excursion if you would like to combine literature, personal stories and regional history.

The Museum of Traditional Abruzzese Clothing and Textiles is also located in Palazzo Valignani, Via Castelferrato 2. The Museo Abiti e Tessuti tradizionali abruzzesi displays ethnographic collections on family weaving, original traditional clothing from the years 1800 to 1920, as well as copies and philological reconstructions. Hand-painted terracotta figures, watercolours and a specialist library round out the exhibition. For a trip with different interests, this makes for a cultural day that goes beyond a single museum theme.

The historic character of the town also includes the Palazzo dei Baroni and the churches of Torrevecchia and Castelferrato. Federico Valignani had the Palazzo dei Baroni built in 1743; the present palace was modelled on the Villa d'Este in Tivoli. The Church of San Giuseppe in Torrevecchia is protected under Article 10 of Legislative Decree 42/2004 by virtue of Decree D.M. 3240 of 13/05/2013. The Church of San Giuseppe in Castelferrato is more securely dated to the mid-17th century and has a single-nave layout, a barrel vault and an adjoining bell tower.

Hills, Viewpoints and Paths

The “Giardino” of the Palazzo dei Baroni covers 5,000 m² of vegetation that remains from the former botanical garden. It includes spaces for leisure as well as recreational and relaxing activities. The “oasi dei laghetti” on the Colli di Castelferrato offers a different landscape experience: hikers can reach the Alento River on foot via the Spirito and Castelferrato ditches.

The Pinetina di Valle Paro and the Pinetina Fontizze are ideal for views and exercise. The Pinetina di Valle Paro lies between Torrevecchia and Castelferrato and offers views of the Maiella and the Adriatic Sea. From the Pinetina Fontizze, a path leads to a viewpoint overlooking the Valle dell'Inferno. Numerous country paths there are used by experienced cyclocross riders. The Torrevecchia area also has paths for recreational cycling and horse-riding activities.

Wine Route and Regional Activities

The regional wine route “Tra i filari dei pregiati vini d'Abruzzo” includes Torrevecchia Teatina in a circular route from Francavilla al Mare via Bucchianico, Ripa Teatina and Chieti and back to Francavilla al Mare. Trekking, cycling excursions and horse rides are possible along the routes offered. This allows you to vary your stay: with a cultural visit, a tour through the landscape or a more active day in the surrounding area.

Local traditions also form part of the character of the town. During the annual Carnevale di Torrevecchia Teatina, the Pulcinella mask appears wearing a conical headdress decorated with ribbons. The Church of San Pasquale Bajlon in Torremontanara is also associated with the discovery of a statue of the saint by the Alento River in the early years of the 19th century.
