San Lorenzo: Building History and Church Art
Accommodation in San Lorenzo
San Lorenzo can be explored through the Chiesa di San Lorenzo Martire as a place with several historical layers: an initial church, known to have existed at least since 1542, was followed by the construction of the historic church in 1786 and, later, the new parish church in the 20th century. The Chiesa di San Lorenzo Martire stands in the Contrada San Lorenzo of the same name, a few kilometres from the centre of Vasto. The area’s history extends from earlier settlement links to a church whose present-day form is based on a post-war design.
Two Churches, Several Periods
An early Church of San Lorenzo had existed at least since 1542. The historic church was built in 1786 and became the centre of the new settlement of the same name, which developed in the following years. This older church should be distinguished from the new parish church, the Chiesa di San Lorenzo Martire: construction of the latter began in 1955, but it was not fully completed until 1969. The early references to churches, the history of the settlement and the modern parish building therefore represent different historical stages. A ceremony on 4 July 2013 was associated with the restoration and reopening of the historic church for worship.
A Modern Church Building with a Clear Layout
The design for the present-day form of the new parish church was created towards the end of the 1950s by the Roman architect Furio Fasolo. Construction had already begun in 1955; completion followed in 1969. The roof and roof coverings were restored in 2010. The dates therefore describe different stages: the start of construction, the design of the present-day form, completion and a later restoration.
On the façade, brick pilasters and brick panels divide the surfaces; stone inlays draw on local materials and building techniques. Inside, the church is laid out as a three-nave space. Round arches on pillars separate the naves. A three-nave layout means that the interior is divided into three adjacent naves; the arches and pillars give this division a visible form. The interior also features the painting “Il Martirio di san Lorenzo” by Cesare Giuliani. The regional heritage authority has designated the Chiesa di San Lorenzo Martire as being of cultural interest.
History of the Parish Area
The history of San Lorenzo extends beyond the churches’ building history. Frentanian necropolises have been discovered in the parish area. The area’s historical record also includes an important ancient route: in antiquity it was called “strata maior”; later, it became the Tratturo Magno. These connections broaden the timeframe of the area’s history—from archaeological discoveries and an ancient route to church buildings from different centuries.
San Lorenzo as a Point of Reference for Your Trip
If you would particularly like to explore church architecture and local history on your trip, the Chiesa di San Lorenzo Martire offers a specific point of reference. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can weigh up whether you would prefer a location in San Lorenzo or one closer to the centre of Vasto. As a geographical reference point, the church is located in Contrada San Lorenzo, a few kilometres from the town centre.
