Gessopalena combines the history of an old village built from gypsum with special places, an impressive Passion play and a landscape shaped by its connection to Lago Sant’Angelo. Anyone planning a trip focused on culture, memories and diverse discoveries will find many concrete points of reference here when choosing a suitable holiday apartment or holiday home.

A Borgo of Gypsum and History

The old village of Gessopalena was built entirely from gypsum. The original settlement dates back to around the year 1000. The Chiesa dell’Annunziata stands in the historic centre and is probably the oldest place of worship in the village. At the entrance to the Borgo, there is also the small neoclassical Chiesa di Sant’Antonio. At Largo del Principe, foundations of ancient buildings carved into the rock can be seen.

The connection between the village and gypsum is especially clear at the Museo del Gesso. It is housed in restored and protected residential buildings as well as underground rooms. The museum presents the production cycles of gypsum, including different types of quarries and kilns. The largest Trappeto is also carved into the gypsum cliff. This makes it possible to learn about the local history of construction and work not only through individual buildings, but also through the materials and production methods of the village.

Culture, Memory and an Extraordinary Performance

A special cultural focus is the Sacra Rappresentazione del Mercoledì Santo. For more than 50 years, it has brought the Passion of Christ back to life. More than 150 people in historical costumes, along with musicians, choirs and dancers, take part in the performance. The ruins of the ancient rock settlement opposite the Majella form the backdrop for the crucifixion scenes. For your trip planning, this means that alongside its quiet local history, Gessopalena also offers a large-scale community event with strong historical and religious significance.

The town’s historical memory also includes the Strage di Sant'Agata di Gessopalena, a tragic event that took place on 21 January 1944 during the Second World War. This specific memorial site complements the older traces of the Borgo with a story from the more recent past.

Landscape Connections and Regional Specialities

Gessopalena owns part of Lago Sant'Angelo, which is also called Lago di Casoli. Thus, alongside its historic townscape, a named lake is also part of the character of the municipality. Another special feature is the Nero Antico di Pretalucente grape variety, which is listed in the National Register of Grape Varieties. Both aspects can help you set your personal priorities if you would like to combine culture, landscapes and regional specialities in one trip.

Guidance for Choosing Your Accommodation

The historic Borgo has uneven paving and structural limitations that do not ensure full accessibility for people with reduced mobility. If this aspect is important for your trip, it should influence your choice of sights and accommodation. Families with different interests can decide before searching for a holiday apartment whether to focus on the gypsum museum, the historic sites, the special performance or Gessopalena’s landscape.
