Clonbur: Walking Trails, Lakes and Gaeltacht Culture
Accommodation in Clonbur
Clonbur, also known as An Fhairche, is a Gaeltacht village in County Galway at the foot of Binn Shléibhe, also called Mount Gable. Set between Lough Corrib and Lough Mask, the village is characterised by woodland trails and diverse natural surroundings, as well as traces of earlier settlements. If you are planning a holiday with walks, scenery and history, you can choose from a variety of routes and things to discover. When looking for a holiday rental in Clonbur, it is also worth considering whether you would prefer to focus on a woodland loop, a longer walking route or historic sites.
Woodland Trails and Routes around Clonbur
The Clonbur Wood Loop Trail is an easy, flat 7.4-kilometre circular route that takes approximately 2.5 hours. It passes through mixed woodland and along the southern shore of Lough Mask. If you are considering a point-to-point walk rather than a loop, the Seanbhóthar Walking Trail offers a different type of route: it runs for 10 kilometres from Cornamóna to Clonbur and takes approximately 2.5 hours to walk. The distances and times given refer to each of the routes named.
The Clonbur Walking Trails comprise four circular routes and one linear route. The designated trails include the Big Island Loop, White Island Loop, Ballykine Loop, Village Loop and Clonbur to Cong Walk. These names offer a selection of different walks within the Clonbur Walking Trails; the Clonbur Wood Loop Trail has its own separately stated distance, flat profile and estimated walking time.
Beech, ash, hazel, birch, willow, yew, Scots pine and larch are among the trees in the mixed woodland along the Clonbur Wood Loop Trail. Clonbur Woods are also home to numerous bird species, pine martens, red squirrels, invertebrates and a great diversity of plant species. The Clonbur Limestone Pavement can also be seen on the trail through Clonbur Woods. Its fossil evidence offers a glimpse of past biodiversity. The trails thus bring woodland, lakeshore and a distinctive geological feature together, without requiring an additional route.
Mount Gable and Historic Traces
Mount Gable is two kilometres west of An Fhairche and offers an easy ascent with views of nearby lakes and the Connemara mountains. The Mount Gable Walk is generally considered easy, although there is a steep climb at both ends. Several old ruins along the route are the remains of a former village dating from the time of the Great Famine. For those interested in history, this provides a tangible historical connection along the walk; however, the steep climbs should also be taken into account when choosing a route.
Ballykine Castle and the Petersburgh Estate also tell the story of the area’s past. Remains of Ballykine Castle, a 13th-century fortress, can be found between Lough Corrib and Lough Mask, near the Clonbur Wood Loop Trail. The ruins of the Petersburgh Estate, once owned by the Lynch family and later by the Guinness family, are in An Fhairche. Part of the property was transferred to the State and is now an outdoor education centre.
Guided Walks and Lake Experiences
Geopark Tours Clonbur offers guided walks in the Joyce Country & Western Lakes UNESCO Geopark. The walks start in the village of Clonbur and are led by a local guide with extensive knowledge of the region’s geology, history and folklore. Group sizes are kept small. This is a way to learn about the landscape and local history with a guide, rather than relying solely on trail names and distance details.
An Fhairche lies between Lough Corrib and Lough Mask and is considered a suitable base for trout fishing. Nearby, the An Charraig Thoir Discovery Point offers an introduction to Conamara and a picnic viewpoint overlooking Lough Corrib. You can therefore weigh up your interests in walking, views and fishing when choosing your destination, without treating these different experiences as one combined route.
