Köcsk: History Between Two Districts
Accommodation in Köcsk
Köcsk consists of Nagyköcsk and Kisköcsk. Between the two districts, the Csikászó stream flows towards Kodó. This division provides a concrete framework for the village’s history: religious sites, historical traces and memorials can be considered in the context of Köcsk’s two districts.
The village’s history is reflected in various ways—from two school chapels and the memory of a former church to a war memorial and a manor house. Those interested in local history will find a range of topics that are not limited to a single era.
School Chapels and the Former Church of St George
The Kisköcski iskolakápolna is a school chapel in Köcsk, on Hunyadi utca. The Nagyköcski iskolakápolna is located at Kossuth Lajos utca 35. Their names clearly distinguish the two chapels; their addresses provide specific points of reference within the village. Both are among Köcsk’s named religious buildings.
A historical trace leads to the present-day cemetery: the foundations of a former church dedicated to Saint George were found there. The building stood in the eastern part of Nagyköcsk, near the cemetery. The Köcski family probably had the church built. It was first mentioned in documents in 1289 and was destroyed during the Ottoman period. The account thus links a cautiously attributed founding with a specific date and the later end of the church building.
Memorial Sites and Historical Architectural Styles
The Nagyköcsk war memorial lists the names of nine people who fell in the First World War. A relief depicts a Honvéd symbol. The memorial was created by Ráday Ignác, a stonemason from Celldömölk. A plaque added later also names six victims of the Second World War and fascism. Names, imagery and the added plaque give the memorial several layers of remembrance.
Another architectural trace is the Ajkay–Hetthéssy manor house in Köcsk. It was probably built by Ajkay Dénes in the 1880s in the historicist style, also described as eclectic. Thus, alongside the school chapels and the historic Church of St George, another building with its own stylistic classification comes into view.
Kisköcsk also has a historical local record: a bell tower with a fire station once stood at a crossroads. The description refers to the past and adds a building—whose former function was explicitly connected with the fire station—to the surviving names and memorials.
In the wider Eisenburg destination
The wider Eisenburg destination offers further perspectives on landscape and other themes. Írottkő Nature Park lies in the northwestern part of Vas County; it includes the entire 4,303-hectare Kőszeg Landscape Protection Area. The Termál Kerékpáros Túraút (Thermal Cycling Route) in Vas County leads to five spa complexes and combines cycling with visits to architectural and natural attractions, as well as other baths. The Vulkán Tour leads to Kis-Somlyó, Ság-hegy and Belső-hegy. These offer different focal points: cycling combined with baths and visits to cultural and natural attractions on the one hand, and the three named mountains on the other.
If you are looking for a holiday rental in Köcsk, you can make your choice based on the kind of trip you want: would you like to focus on local history, with its chapels, historical traces and memorial sites, or are you interested in the broader themes of the wider Eisenburg destination?
