Tündérkert: gardens, structures and images

Tündérkert in Viszák is a garden with trees, well-kept green spaces and open meadows. Some of its apple, walnut and pear trees are about 100 years old. Different tree species and open spaces come together to create a varied garden landscape.

One of its distinctive structures is the Tündérkert Star: architecture students from Budapest University of Technology and Economics built it around an old pear tree in 2012; the structure provides shelter for visitors. In 2013, a wooden footbridge made of acacia wood, known as a “börü,” was built next to Tündérkert. Kemencekápolna is also part of Tündérkert and was completed in 2015 with the support of university students. Images by a local photographic artist can be seen on the side walls between its wooden columns.

Memorial sites and local history

The memorial tree commemorates the victims of the deportations of the 1950s. Residents of Viszák unveiled it on 23 October 2007 during the “Élő Emlékezet Ünnepe” celebration. The names of the three deported families, Böhm, Dávid and Török, are engraved on the tree. The date, occasion and family names make this memorial a tangible trace of local history.

Viszák’s shared Evangelical-Reformed church is also associated with a historical detail: after the Second World War, the bell in the old belfry could not be rung.

Pálinka from Viszák

A distillery in Viszák was founded before the Second World War by the wealthier farmers of the village. For generations, many people have had their spirits distilled there, and Viszák pálinka became well known far beyond the area. Its history links the distillery’s founding by local farmers with a distilling tradition maintained over generations.
