Culture

Szalafő emerged in the period after the Hungarian conquest and initially served as the seat of princely border guards. After the foundation of the Hungarian state, the settlement later became the seat of royal border guards. An ancient Roman military road also ran through the Rába Valley towards Savaria (Szombathely).

The first documented mention of Szalafő dates from 1393; a document from 1428 listed the settlement as part of Őrség.
