Local History and Architecture

The Szikszay Local History Collection is named after Gellért Károlyné Szikszay Edit. Archival photographs and characteristic objects from Őrség illustrate the region’s history and the everyday lives of its residents. Here, history is brought to life not only through a sequence of events, but also through images and objects from daily life.

A striking landmark is the fortified Romanesque Szent-Péter Church, probably built around 1230. Nearby is an excavated 17th-century brick kiln, which can now be visited as a historic monument. The church and kiln offer contrasting points of interest: Romanesque religious architecture on the one hand, and an industrial monument on the other.

Városszer is also home to a Late Baroque Reformed church. Its excellent acoustics make it a venue for classical music concerts, too. The Malom Visitor Centre is located at 116 Városszer, in a 19th-century mill building. It serves as an information centre and exhibition venue, organises the Őrség cultural festivals and is their main venue. The town’s many facets thus include architectural history, exhibitions and cultural events.

Botanical Trail and Nature Exhibition

The Rezgőnyár nature trail is a botanical trail in Őriszentpéter. It is 0.3 kilometres long, with seven stops; the stated walking time is half an hour. Its length, number of stops and estimated time make it an easy way to include the town’s botanical highlights in your day’s plans.

The exhibition at the visitor centre of the Őrség National Park Directorate in Őriszentpéter offers a different perspective. It focuses on the natural values of the Őrség Natura 2000 area. Enlarged models illustrate the complex relationships between living organisms and their environment, as well as the values of settlements, forests, grasslands and wetlands. Compared with the botanical trail, the exhibition offers a different approach: individual stops along an outdoor route versus a broader look at the connections between habitats and their inhabitants.

Festivals Throughout the Year

The Őrségi Vásár traditionally takes place every year in Őriszentpéter on the last weekend of June. The Nemzetközi Tökfesztivál is traditionally held here every year in early October. The two dates fall in different parts of the year and may influence when you choose to travel.
