Závod: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The body of the martyr Saint Benedict has been kept in the church of Závod since 28 June 1777. The relic of Saint Benedict can be viewed during Mass or by prior arrangement; it is listed as cultural heritage in Závod’s local register of values.

Culture and history

The Calvary Chapel, with its 14 stations, rises above the village of Závod. Despite later alterations to the façade, its floor plan and exterior and interior spatial design preserve the tradition of the chapels of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, making it unique in the region. The Calvary in Závod is considered a unique type of Calvary in Southern Transdanubia.

The Church of Saint John in Závod was built in the Baroque style between 1764 and 1768, and its furnishings date from the second half of the 18th century. The garden contains a stone cross and statues of the Immaculata and Saint Vendel. The organ dates from 1779, but was rebuilt at the end of the 19th century by Endre Unger; József Janicsek is named as its builder.

The Závod Local History Museum can be visited by prior arrangement. It comprises a room containing the material heritage of Transylvanian Székely families who came to Závod from Bukovina in 1945, and displays traditional costumes, furnishings and equipment belonging to the local Swabians.

Further Avar and Roman finds were discovered during excavations in Závod and can be viewed in the county museum. In 1893, the parish priest Mór Wosinsky uncovered a Migration Period cemetery with 104 graves in Závod. Architectural features of value include former Swabian homesteads with façade ornamentation, wrought-iron fences and sheet-metal work; many residential and farm buildings have survived in their original or restored condition.

Festivals and local traditions

Závod’s “Forgó” Festival is assigned to the “Tourism and Travel” category in the municipality’s local register of values. It takes place on the second Saturday in September and includes a gastronomic cauldron-cooking competition. The Fényköszöntő Festival has been organised in Závod for years on a civic initiative.

The Faludisznó vágás Festival takes place on the second Saturday in February and offers dishes prepared according to Transylvanian and Swabian traditions. The Závod Bortúra has likewise been organised for years on a civic initiative.

Nature and trails

The area around Závod offers opportunities for hiking and cycling. It is considered scenically attractive and includes forests as well as expansive views.

The Papdi Chapel, located at the site of the former village of Papd, remains accessible in a forest clearing and is a popular destination for excursions.
