Vámosszabadi: Cycle Path, Wetland Landscape and Local History
Accommodation in Vámosszabadi
Vámosszabadi appeals to travelers who want to combine nature, outdoor activities and local history in one stay. There are four fishing lakes in the village center, while Körtvélylapos shapes the wetland landscape in the surrounding area. A 943-meter-long cycle path also opened in 2014. Together, these offer different themes to consider when planning your trip: bodies of water, cycling and distinctive plant life. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether cycling, nature or local history will be the main focus of your trip.

Cycling as part of your trip
A 943-meter-long cycle path opened in Vámosszabadi in 2014. It gave locals and tourists the opportunity to explore the nature-rich area by bike. At just under a kilometer long, it provides a compact option for planning your day. If you plan to use the cycle path, check its current route and condition in advance. This lets you consider cycling as a focus in its own right, alongside the plant life and wetland landscape in the surrounding area.
Körtvélylapos and its plant life
Körtvélylapos lies in the vicinity of Vámosszabadi, among canals to the southwest and west of the village. White willows, gray willows, black poplars and European cornel grow along the canals. The area is home to both floating and rooted aquatic plant communities, as well as protected marsh pennyworts and marsh gladioli. The marsh gladiolus is particularly distinctive: Körtvélylapos is the only place in Szigetköz where it has been recorded to date. White water lilies, water lilies, water mint and branched bur-reed are also common there. Trees along the canals, aquatic plant communities and protected plants give the area a range of distinctive features. For nature lovers, Körtvélylapos is a destination in its own right, separate from the bodies of water in the village center.
Bodies of water and local history
The four fishing lakes are in the center of Vámosszabadi. Those interested in them can focus on a water-based activity in the heart of the village; the distinctive plant life, by contrast, is found nearby at Körtvélylapos. This distinction can help you decide what interests you most: should your trip focus more on the fishing lakes or on the landscape and plants of Körtvélylapos?
Local history also has a specific point of interest. A memorial plaque to the heroes of Szabadi who fell in the First World War was installed at the Vámosszabadi bell tower during a renovation in the mid-20th century. The bells currently there were made and installed in 1928. These two dates refer to different events: 1928 is when the bells were made and installed, while the memorial plaque dates from a later renovation. For those who want to include local remembrance culture in their trip alongside nature and cycling, this is another historical theme to explore.
More to explore in the wider Győr-Moson-Sopron destination
The wider Győr-Moson-Sopron destination offers its own cultural and landscape themes beyond the local attractions and surrounding area of Vámosszabadi. The Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma was founded in 996. The World Heritage property of the Archabbey of Pannonhalma and its Natural Environment includes the monastic complex, the basilica, the educational buildings, the Chapel of Our Lady, the Millennium Chapel, and botanical and herb gardens. The local memorial site at the bell tower can thus be considered alongside a monastic World Heritage site with several named components, as a distinct cultural theme.
Another landscape theme in the wider Győr-Moson-Sopron destination is the Fertő/Neusiedler See Cultural Landscape. It encompasses Eurasia’s westernmost steppe lake, as well as wetlands, saline soils, reed beds and shore areas. Lake Neusiedl forms the core of Fertő-Hanság National Park; the Hungarian part of the lake has been protected since 1977. The Fertő-táj Cultural Landscape was granted UNESCO World Heritage status on December 13, 2001. These distinct regional themes offer a different focus from the cycle path, fishing lakes, plant life and local history of Vámosszabadi.
