Discover Gönyű: cycling route, ship-themed playground and village street
Accommodation in Gönyű
Gönyű can be discovered through a variety of local highlights: the Hungarian section of EuroVelo 6 passes through the town, and the Duna Panoráma Tanösvény visitor experience includes a ship-themed playground. There is also a village street almost three kilometres long and a ship mast on Háry Dezső tér. The cycling route and the townscape offer different starting points for planning your trip.
Village street and traces of ships
Kossuth Lajos utca is almost three kilometres long and is considered Hungary’s longest cobbled village street. Its length and distinction make it a special local feature. The ship mast on Háry Dezső tér adds a different note: it was erected there and inaugurated by the Honismereti Egylet in 2008. The mast is considered unique in Hungary. Together with the ship-themed playground on the Duna Panoráma Tanösvény, it brings the theme of ships into focus; the paving on Kossuth Lajos utca represents a very different local feature.
Cycling route and guidance for choosing accommodation
The Hungarian section of EuroVelo 6 passes through Gönyű. The connection from Győr is also a cycling route in its own right: Gönyű can be reached from there via a cycle path considered safe and well developed; the distance is about 15 kilometres. If you are planning your trip by bike, you can distinguish the route through Gönyű from the connection from Győr.
The bicycle service point on Háry Dezső tér can also charge electric bicycles. When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to first consider which themes you want to shape your stay: the cycling route and bicycle service, or local features around the street, square and ship-themed playground. This lets you choose accommodation based on your own travel interests, without combining these different points of interest into a single route.
In the wider destination of Győr-Moson-Sopron
The wider destination of Győr-Moson-Sopron includes other distinct cultural and landscape themes. The Benedictine monastery in Pannonhalma was founded in 996. The World Heritage property of the Pannonhalma Archabbey and its natural environment includes the monastery complex, basilica, educational buildings, Chapel of Our Lady, Millennium Chapel, and botanical and herb gardens. This extensive ensemble of monastic and garden sites broadens the cultural perspective beyond Gönyű’s local features.
The Fertő/Neusiedler See Cultural Landscape encompasses Eurasia’s westernmost steppe lake, as well as wetlands, saline soils, reed beds and lakeshores. The Hungarian part of Lake Neusiedl has been protected since 1977; the lake forms the core of Fertő-Hanság National Park. The Fertő-táj Cultural Landscape was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 13 December 2001.
An electric boat trip on Lake Neusiedl explores reed channels and bays on the western side of the lake. Along the way, you can observe aquatic wildlife, reed warblers, great egrets, purple herons and various ducks. Tour dates and booking conditions may change, so check them before making specific plans.
