Kisbajcs – River Landscape and Memorial Park
Accommodation in Kisbajcs
Kisbajcs is bordered by the Danube to the northeast and the Mosoni-Duna to the south. Wooded natural landscapes lie along both rivers. Kisbajcs is also one of the settlements affected by the Szigetköz Natura 2000 area. Alongside this natural setting, Markos Sándor emlékpark and local sights offer other points of interest.
River Landscape and Memorial Park
Markos Sándor emlékpark serves as a rest stop for cyclists passing through. On a triple hill in the park stand a Millennium memorial cross, the municipality’s coat of arms and a kopjafa. The park also provides a venue for small events, commemorations and gatherings. It thus brings together a place to rest, memorials and space for community occasions.
Culture and History in Kisbajcs
Sights in Kisbajcs include the Rózsafüzér királynője templom, a Mária fülke on the Kisbajcsi országút and a nature trail. Local points of interest thus range from religious sites to a nature attraction.
A former settlement is also part of the history of the local area: Szavo, also known as Zovn, lay between Kisbajcs and Bácsa and was later absorbed into the area of Kisbajcs. This historical layer adds to the area’s river landscape, memorial park and present-day sights.
In the wider Győr-Moson-Sopron destination
Within the wider Győr-Moson-Sopron destination, Pannonhalma offers its own cultural focus. The Benedictine monastery was founded in 996. The World Heritage property of the Archabbey of Pannonhalma and its natural environment comprises the monastery complex, the basilica, educational buildings, the Chapel of Our Lady, the Millennium Chapel, and botanical and herb gardens. Esterházy Palace in Fertőd is also an outstanding example of Hungarian Baroque-Rococo palace architecture.
Another regional facet is the Fertő/Neusiedler See cultural landscape. It comprises Eurasia’s westernmost steppe lake, as well as wetlands, saline soils, reed beds and lakeshores. Lake Neusiedl forms the core of Fertő-Hanság National Park; the Hungarian part of the lake has been protected since 1977. The Fertő-táj cultural landscape received UNESCO World Heritage status on 13 December 2001.
The Pannonhalmi Tájvédelmi Körzet Landscape Protection Area covers 8,272 hectares and has two focal areas: the Pannonhalmi Hills and the calcareous sandy steppes of Kisalföld. The Pannonhalmi Hills consist of three nearly parallel ranges: Szemere, Csanak and Pannonhalma. From the Várhely lookout, views extend northeast towards Sopron, Sopron-Bánfalva, Bécsi-domb, Lake Neusiedl and the Mosoni Plain.
Nature experiences in the wider destination also include an electric boat trip on Lake Neusiedl. It passes through reed channels and bays on the western side, where you can observe aquatic wildlife, reed warblers, great egrets, purple herons and various ducks. If you plan this trip, check dates and booking conditions in advance.
